Yes, pictures prove nothing! There are cramped and spacious sites wherever you go, here or there.  I've mentioned before a lakeside site at Riva del Garda we walked through some years back (staying in a very nice hotel, us) where you could lean out of your window to shake your neighbour's hand and with just a little more effort give his wife a goodnight kiss. kiss

9 years is a long time back and it must have been as most sites with grass pitches out of season to have been taped off, it has changed a lot, as numerous sites have, with the millions the club invests each year in upgrading the network but there are still a few small pitches, on the site but as the lease with the College has only six years to run I  do not think any more major investment will take place before the lease is sorted,

Morn  hill at Winchester is in for major investment this winter?as the club are now in position to spend on it ,and it will then hopefully be open all year

Commons Wood will have the showers etc back in order next month ,but that site has just seven years left on the lease

But as you seem have found a returning site "over there"have you booked your  pitch for next year,?as we get older we, like you have our favourites ,which takes away the need to chance what we are getting , hence our preference for cc sites they take away the "worry?"of the unknown,as we no longer take our LV over seas/or under if using the tunnelsurprisedcool

There many very cramped sites at peak times in UK 35 to 40 years ago and I drove on and off a number of sites without stopping and got any payment refunded.

    "Best of all worlds"

Well, yes, having a static as well as a tourer could well be said to be the best of all worlds,  but towing a "static" seems a little self defeating to me. Our "best of all worlds" comprises the static in Cornwall which we can drive to in under 3 hours plus the tourer to visit other spots like the Forest of Dean which we went to last week, but not to go back to the same place time and time again. And a couple of overseas holidays a year, but again, varying our destinations.

We're very lucky to be able to do it all and will continue to as long as we're both physically able. But that's our choice and of course others choose to do things differently. To even suggest that one style is "better" than another is just absurd (IMHO). smile

Both M and David are enjoying their retirement, if I can achieve their level of happiness when Michelle and I retire, then I will think myself lucky and content.

Both different, but the same in many respects.

    God I hate them. 😁

Actually 2 of those 3 are synonymous aren't they - just not sure which 2! laughing

We visited Cirencester about 4 years back, we got stuck with one of those narrow pitches where you need to park your car across the front if you are putting up an awning.

Problem was that with the length of our van, there was no room in front for the car.  Since they ask the length of your van, should wardens not be allocating pitches where necessary?

There were plenty of small vans and small camper vans on the large hardstandings.  We had requested a pitch close to the disabled facilities.

Wardens did not seem aware that we had a long van and were surprised when OH went back and said that there was no room on the pitch they had allocated to us to park the car as requested.

Instead we chose another pitch nearby where we could have the rear of the van overhanging the grass behind to allow space to park the car.  The wheels of the van had to be almost on the grass to allow this.

This was fine with us, but not ideal if the grass needed to be cut!

Have also been a couple of times to sites on Lake Garda, no problem with spacing, nowhere near neighbours, but then we do not go in high season.   Pitches where we were were all marked out and would be plenty of space between units even when site was busy.

Surely even you'll concede that different folk are entitled to different choices, David. We each do what we think works best for us. It's the suggestion that your (one's wink) particular choice is "best" which I was saying is absurd, if not rather arrogant!

PS - you're going to have to explain "tick box" travelling to me - you've used that expression before and I haven't a clue what it means?

yes, +1, this idea that how one chooses to tour is the way to do it is as you say absurd.

I like the way I use my caravan and hope others get the same pleasure.

Exactly my point - we each do our own thing, no-one has a monopoly of wisdom, it's all about choice. Glad you've come round to my way of thinking! smile

As this thread has gone way of topic and has drifted into discussions about non-UK sites and touring, I'm locking it and asking Rowena to review whether she wants to re-opening.
