Is 30 miles too far away? We were very comfortable for a few days at the municipal site in the heart of the old fortress at Blaye - the local school band gave an open air concert, the first restaurant in the village fed us well, the wine shop just down the hill had an astonishing selection from local vineyards, and there's a ferry across the other side of the estuary. But it might be a bit too far from Bordeaux ?

ET I heard earlier this summer than the municipal at Blaye is closing for good at the end of this season, have you heard anything along those lines or is it just rumours?

We are hoping to stop there on our way South in another month. If you've not heard anything I'll see what I can find out.

Sorry Tammy, can't help. It's a few years since we were there.

We are on the Ile de Re at the moment and my goodness it is manic.

Have a look at the 'camping card ACSI' website for some sites near Bordeaux.  You don't need the card to use the sites.  There is a site on the outskirts of Bordeaux - Le Lac I think but I've not been there so can't recoommend it.

Depends how far from Bordeaux. 60 km? We stayed at Chez Tayzac last June. A British-owned "CL" style site. Lovely spot, in the midst of vineyards and very, very quiet. The prettiest chemical toilet emptying point ever, surrounded by Jasmine flowers. Level hard standings, and awnings can peg out on grass. A lovely little toilet and shower pod, which even boasted shower gel, shampoo and conditioner! Super couple who own it. Check out their website for details of the Park and Ride to Bordeaux, which I can't say we used, as we have a Border Collie and don't do cities. But we did do the local wine producers. The local "factory shop" was amazing. Blaye fortress town well worth a visit and boasts an automated coin-operated laundrette next door to great little restaurant. Pop the duds in, go for a 13 Euro 3-course lunch nextdoor and unload em after dessert. Perfect. Sorry, digress from Bordeaux city, but it's weird what different things we appreciate as caravanners. Check out UK Campsite for reviews on this little site.

We stayed at this site a few years ago when it was in the Acsi discount card. It was ok for a few days but not a small site as such, nor quiet when its busy. It was fine for us as we had cycles and we could get into Bordeaux fairly easy.

Thanks ET, I'll see what info we can get when we are over there.

I'll bet Ile de Re is busy at this time of year, lovely place though. Have a good trip.

I don't know if the OP has a MH or not....if so, we stayed on the aire in Blaye at the ancestral home of Vauban, the architect..

its now a vineyard, provides free pitches with hook up for 48 hours and is lovely....a tour available (no pressure) and a fab restaurant, too.

no hesitation in returning and recommending this little oasis...

We use Camping Beau Soleil at Gradignan for an overnight stay. €19.84 per night [Feb 2020 prices] for car, caravan, 6 amp ehu and 2 adults. Traveling north is very easy access from autoroute [about 5 miles] but the southern route involves the Bordeaux Rocade which can be a wee bit fraught around rush hour sealed.

Site address is 371 Cours General de Gaulle, Gradignan, 33170 France. Tel: 05 56 89 17 66 [they sometimes get a wee bit peeved if you turn up without a reservation, even though they usually have spare pitches; after a 4 hours drive, Gallic strops are best avoided ...].
