Route etc advice welcomed. Italy to Burgundy
Hello
As part of a caravan holiday next year we are planning to stay at La Valle Agricampeggio near Lucca/Pisa. We then plan to travel up to Chalon Sur Saone. Does anyone have any experience of travelling this route with their caravan and any recomendations for overnights
Many thanks for your help

The direct route and the quickest route - because it's motorway all the way - is via the Mont Blanc tunnel - but the motorway tolls and the tunnel fee will cost about 186 euros. Are you happy with that ?
There are plentiful stops either side of the tunnel and if you are going that way I can suggest them - they are all worth much more than a single night.

As per eurotraveller, this is an expensive section of road, the autostrada around Genoa and north to the Mont Blanc tunnel is littered with tunnels and if you can avoid peak times around Genoa I would recommend it as road is relatively curvy with not a lot of room for you and a truck.even for a motorway. Stopping to visit the Cinque Terre is worthwhile but you will need to check site availability as its a very popular area in high season good sites in vicinity of Chamonix for a scenic stop, there is not a lot between the tunnel and Genoa. Alternative is the Frejus Tunnel but costing will be similar. t

MandG, As Tigi says the Frejus tunnel is priced just as high as the Mont Blanc tunnel - they each cost over 60 euros one way with a caravan or a Motorhome.
If you have more time than money you can cross over the Alps instead of under them - the road from Cuneo (It.) over to Barcelonette (Fr.) is straightforward, and so is the road from Turin (It.) over to Briancon (Fr.) We have used both those routes with caravans without any problem - and they give the opportunity for stretches of good road which are toll free once you are on the French side.
But both those routes will certainly take longer than the direct motorway route.

We have stopped at two or three Italian campsites between Aosta and the Mont Blanc tunnel, and of those we best liked Camping Monte Bianco at Sarre - we used that as a base to explore parts of the Gran Paradiso national Park. But if that site is too far for one one day from Lucca then Camping Mombarone at Ivrea looks good, though I don't know it personally.
On the French side of the tunnel we have stopped several times in the Chamonix area - Camping Mer de Glacé is perhaps the best in the town itself as a base for us to ride the cablecars and do some Mrs May style gentle walking, and also down on the plain at Camping Mont Blanc Village l'Ecureuil at Sallanches, which is far less busy and a good touring / driving base for the area.
Enjoy your planning.

Another option which we have done is to take the Autostrada North around Alessandria and carry on towards Lake Maggiore. From Baveno you continue to Domodossola and the Simplon pass (much better now the improvements are complete). This takes you into Switzerland (possible trip to Zermatt?) then around Lake Geneva and across to Macon. You will need a vignette or two (caravan) for Switzerland. This is a very scenic route and the pass is fairly quiet as most lorries use the tunnel route.
From Chalon-sur-Saone we have also travelled to Genoa via the Mediterranean. Longer route of course.

The question no one has asked is why you are planning one expedition which includes two very different areas. What's the story behind your itinerary? Chalon sur Saone is a good night halt or two, with a pleasant campsite by the river but what else? I'm intrigued!
