Exeter race course nightmare noise
we have arrived today at Exeter race course for a quiet long weekend.when had paid the warden informed us there may be noise due an event. The blaring noise of loud music has finished finally at 2125 hours and we now have it all day tomorrow. Does the caravan club not think they should put a notice on the website when a booking is made? After the wardens have had about six months notice of this event.
If I want a weekend of loud music I’ll go to a festival. We are off first thing. Cancelling the tedtbof our weekend. Will we get a refund I doubt it.
We have been coming here for the past ten years never ever again.

That's not good! How long ago did you book? Usually on the email confirmation there is notice of any special events that might affect your stay.
Hope you manage to find a suitable alternative - if you head for a different club site you won't get a refund but will get credit for money paid (I think!)

It can happen on Racecourse sites. We experienced the same at Uttoxeter.
I now check the racecourse's own website for events before booking.

At least its legal and organised. We once had the pleasure of an all night rave at the now long gone Crusty Camp up the road. Complete with circling police helicopter.........

We will in future check race course websites. We just feel the club should have put something on the club site or email giving us the chance to change. Group playing are total rubbish. Wouldn’t be so bad if they were half decent

Not much noise at the bottom of the site, DD, but obviously the woodland deadens it more in summer.

Can't say that we've ever noticed the noise as being excessive and we are used to quite sites, being mainly CL users.

The OP does say the event was scheduled to carry on all day on the 7th. In the event, the weather probably made sitting around outside impossible. However, if it had been nice it would clearly have not been very peaceful or relaxing for TP, if he had wanted to remain on site.
The club can and does provide information on the web site pages for some sites. Below is the note on that of Melrose:-

On Saturday the 15 June The Proclaimers are playing a concert at the rugby pitch on Annay Road (1 mile from our site) which may be audible during the evening.Please note that there is an annual children's football tournament taking place in the park grounds to the front and back of the site on Sunday 16th June. There's a possibility of stray footballs coming over the fence and some noise disruption throughout the day.
Perhaps something similar should have been displayed for Exeter.

Race Course sites often are noisy, apart from race days they host other events, the buildings and marquees are used for weddings, corporate gatherings etc. I would think it would be quite difficult to post up every event and it's a case of user beware.
Exeter with it's close proximity to the motorway is a risky venue for a quiet weekend. There are lots of nice sites in Devon where a quiet weekend could be found. Unfortunate for the OP but not unexpected generally on that site and if you've managed ten years of visits without disturbance you have possibly done better than others.

Whilst I appreciate there may be more events on a race course site. I don't see why it would be particularly difficult for the club to highlight noisy multi day events, as in the OP's case. I realise they are nothing to do with the club. However, it does not look as though those at Melrose are either, and yet the club has seen fit to mention them.
Surely that is the benifit of a web site, it can be easily updated. The club also sends out an enjoy your holiday email a few weeks / a month before. It would be very easy to include the information in those. That would at least have given the OP a little forewarning.

The huge benefit of checking the racecourse’s own website is that it is likely to be more accurate in terms of race meetings and events. Do we really need the club to do everything for us?

I don't know what the circumstances are surrounding the event or what the "event" is, or even if it's actually something happening on site or nearby, the OP hasn't given any details.
For race course sites I'd suggest checking the Jockey Club events list for the one you've chosen? There is nothing on the Exeter lists and maybe no-one knew it would happen? At least the warden warned on arrival and it's possible to change venues even after you've paid.
I'm not unsympathetic to the OP but it can happen anywhere.
edit I see the event was known about six months previously? It's an after the event post that might give others warning to ring race course sites and not just book on line.

I can’t find any event listed for Exeter Racecourse actually at the course. I wonder if it’s a big music festival somewhere nearby. I think there is a big concert venue down hill somewhere.

Ah, could be that. Sounds too organised to be Travellers Camp down road, they go on all night. I thought it had gone, but been legalised nowadays.
I doubt Club are going to feel responsible for a concert five, six miles away.

I don't know why some get so wound up about noise when it does not go on into the night. Last year when I was staying on the Exeter site there was some kind of event for youths. Many tents were pitched over near the wooded copse area of the site and they had a commual area opposite the stands in the centre of the course. They did have a disco going until 9pm one evening but I found the whole episode unintrusive and rather entertaining.
I guess if they did not make good use of the course and its land it would not be viable to keep it going and we would not have a site there either.

Agree PD. As I mentioned earlier, the illegal New Age travellers Camp is half a mile or so up little forest road from Racecourse entrance. They were celebrating a birthday and the music, mainly drumming, went on all night. It didn’t bother us one bit, but the same night, some not so friendly Travellers of the not very nice variety invaded the actual site and they did cause mayhem. The drumming Crusties got a helicopter and police cars. All the site got was a very young, totally ineffective plod and this was despite an elderly member actually being assaulted. I have never seen a Club Site empty of visitors so quickly. Area Manager arrived and he and Wardens helped folks move out to other sites. Racecourse now has barriers on to prevent a repeat, it wasn’t nice to be caught up in.

Oops, apologies the Hijack the Castle event is September, (you have been warned) but there is a lot of music going on around Exeter and sound travels. So if you're anywhere near Glastonbury at the end of the month take heed also (they had a break last year.)
