Motorhome trip to Florence
We are planning a trip to Florence in our 3.5 ton Auto trail travelling from Caen, would like some advice on which routes and passes would be suitable without using the tunnels if possible....also any camp site recommendations near Florence.

ViaMichelin website will give you routes if you put your start and finish points in. Crossing the Alps on that route from Caen to Florence without using a tunnel can be done via Tours and Lyon, and then either the Mont Cenis or Montgenevre passes - both are ok with a caravan or a Motorhome - but only when the winter snows have cleared. Perhaps someone else can suggest a campsite or an Aire for you for when you get to Florence,

Yes of course - the Great St Bernard Pass or the Simplon Pass if you would like to go through Switzerland. All things are possible after the snow melts and the roads are re opened .

Is there a reason why you are travelling via Caen? It's not the most convenient British port to get to Italy. Going via Dover might open up more options? My option would be to go via Germany and Austria into Italy and take the Bologna road down to Florence. The last time we went this way this road was being improved but I suspect does now include some tunnels.

There are three campsites and numerous Motorhome Sostas in the immediate vicinity of Florence and within walking distance of public transport to the centre. See the Camper Contact App. (You’ll need to type in Firenze). There are reviews and photos of them on the App.
I assume your averse to the long tunnels (eg Mont Blanc etc)? Tunnels are very common on Italian roads and you’ll have difficulty visiting Italy if you want to avoid tunnels at all. The motorway along the Med coast from France into Italy via Genoa is peppered with tunnels and bends and I’d recommend you avoid this route.
