Do we? or, don't we?

I was looking at the national trust site at Houghton Mill, Cambs. and discovered that it was apparently run by our caravan etc. club.

On looking in the handbook for more info. I cannot see it at all.

So - does the NT or the CMC run that site?

It would be helpful to know when it comes to booking it - do I chat to the helpful ladies at NT or ring Grimstead Towers?  I certainly cannot see it on our site booking section.

It was a club run site until a few years ago but the NT decided to run it themselves.

I'm surprised you missed the discussions about it, RF.

Ah ,but I was not a NT member then.

Thanks for the info - interestingly the clubs old logo still comes up on the paperwork when entering their website.

You were a member of CAMC and CT which is where the discussions were aired. That’s why I’m surprised you missed it.

Apparently, it is still a good site. Milliehull is a regular visitor there.

It was definitely club run, Easy. Club signs, club wardens, club rules, online booking etc…

And it still is a good site. We've not stayed there but have looked over it a couple of times. As TW says Milliehull the expert on the place!!

The National Trust took over the running of the site from the 2015 season onwards. It's a nicely situated site. Be interesting to know if the showers have changed since our visit many years ago when the individual showers had heavy curtains rather than doors?

    Morning

Back when we were lads the field where the site is was a scout activity place. Used to be good fun camping there.

The NT pulled the plug on the club back in 2015. The wardens left the club and stayed on a few years to run the site. Houghton is a nice village with a couple of decent pubs. The Hemingfords, St.Ives and Huntingdon are all a stones throw away. There are some lovely walks in the area, a nice circular one is out of the path at the back of the site, follow the thicket path that runs alongside the Ouse river, then into St.Ives. After that go over the old river bridge past the Dolphin Hotel. After the long bridge over the meadow (flood plain) bear right along a dirt track past what used to be a willow forest, there's still a building there I think that used to be the basket makers place. At the end turn right and follow path into Hemingford Grey (go past my old house of 48 years!!). Eventually you'll go past (or in)the Cock Inn, turn right just past the pub then left at the end and you'll be at the village church. There you can pick up the towpath by the river. Follow that and you'll come to a caravan park. Turn left there and you're in Hemingford Abbots. Stop by the Axe and Compass pub for a swift one then continue for about half a mile you'll see a sign for Houghton. Turn right there and walk over the old bailey bridge, along the path across the meadow and you're then over the river lock and through the mill back where you started.

The gateway to the site is a bit tight but overall it's a lovely place. Hope this is of help Enjoy.laughing

A few pics from our stay there, lovely place to wander along the Gt Ouse and local villages. Temporary on site buildings due to possible flooding. the adjoining Mill is magnificent (good tea rooms too.)
