If you just want an overnight there is also Camping Village du Lac at Bordeaux as well as the site you mention -  but it would be a pity to rush on without at least a day in the city.

But if you want to stay somewhere really different there is the municipal campsite site at Blaye - actually inside the walls of the historic Vauban fortress. Approach to Blaye is from junction 38 of the motorway on the north side of Bordeaux, and the final access to the campsite is to drive over a drawbridge across the castle moat, through the stone arch and the original guard house, and then choose a pitch on the ramparts with a view overlooking the estuary. But it's not a posh site, and doesn't open until 1st May, so not everyone's cup of tea.

shame you don't have a MH as the aire at Chateau Vauban at Blaye (in the winery) is truly lovely and free for two nights (incl free EHU)....

we strolled up to the municipal campsite in the walled part of the town and it's a nice place to be, albeit €17+ a night against the nicer aire for free...

having said that, we normally do the trip from Nantes (Les Sorriniéres aire) to Irun in one stint....

we 'stumbled' across Blaye on one trip determined to go a little slower.....glad we did, the dinner evening in the winery was terrific.

thanks all , we are off next Tuesday Poole Cherburg so did not want to dilly dally in France as weather could be a bit doggey, but we are going to give France a whirll on our way back in June, but will be leaving Spain from somewhere around Barcelona then heading west across France, camping Montreal is looking good as is camping Anse du Brick in Cherbourg where we will stop for a few days to sort the dog out, must say travel in France looks to be a little bit more of a challenge than Spain.

May do this, but i see a couple of folk have been issued with speeding tickets and i reckon on a good run this has to be 6+ hrs undecided

yes, but I can go faster than youwink

we are leaving Oliva in Spain in the morning and crossing back towards Irun (probably stopping overnight in Tudela) and I've been looking at the weather in the SW corner of France for our next stop and Biarritz, Bordeaux, Royan etc are all looking really good for this early in the year...

again, for ourselves, the amount of informal stopping in Spain has been great, with the a,ount of formal (aires) stopping in France even more plentiful.

sites for caravanners in France is very season dependent and this early I can see the issue.

    have a great trip.

in fairness, when we do the winter stint from Nantes to Irun, we aren't going to be doing anything but getting there....too darned cold...so we use the toll, a steady 105 kph gets the job done in an unhurried way...

BTW, no....not interested in towing a caravan.....at any speed...

quite a few in and around the Bordeaux area are 24x7x365 but a lot do not open until Apr/May, Caravan Beau Soleil is c&cc recommendation and is 24x7x365, looks ok for stop over. Sites i have looked at for our return trip are mostly 24x7x365.

Bordeaux to Urrugne is only 2 hours by autoroute (ish depending on your speed) so not really worth an overnight.
