Two Calendar months all but an hour since the latest post and despite everything ABM is still looking forward to a summers crikit starting on WEDNESDAY this week at 11.00 ~~ urgent shopping trip tomorrow to stock up on comestibles and pain killers
More proof, if indeed proof is needed, of the triumphs of hope over years of adversity

Looking forward to Wednesday too, Brian. I've been 'warming up' by watching the Roses match on tv. Wow! what a pasting for Mr Boycott's lot! A win for the Red Rose county by an Innings and 79 runs, but I'm keeping my head down as the locals are not that friendly, especially when they recognise my Twang ain't the same as theirs! There were 2 notable performers, which in my view, should walk straight into the Test team: Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson. Both at least deserve a place in the squad. Time will tell.

Just started the last session of the First day of crikit at Lords and the noise woke yours truly up to discover the Gross result from the earlier sessions !! { 144 for 3 }
Well, as usual, I was gently drowsing until Tuffers started talking -- oh, so very nearly fell from my recliner !! Not complaining tho', it's delightful to be able to wake, take a drink and lie down again { after I've posted this screed of course } to gently drift . . . . . . . . .

The home of crikkit has once again delivered us a flat, boring pitch with just it's slope to rely on. (Why aren't all Test matches played at Old Trafford???)
However, great batting by Devon Conway and England finish on 'Nelsons'' and 2 down (David Shepherd would have been hopping ALL night!) Though a slightly tedious watch, albeit down to his mastery of the willow, Mr Conway's debut double century got me thinking about names: English county as Christian name, Welsh cities as surname (I know, I know, Conway isn't a city but it brings the list down to just 6 and I cant pronounce (or indeed spell) half of the towns)
eg .Kent St Davids, Cornwall Newport, Cheshire St.Asaph (just for you Brian!) etc. My favourite would be Lancashire Bangor
Well it beats knitting.........zzzzzz ZZZZZ

Add to that Peterson Kevin of that ilk.
Grieg and Peterson even captained the side.
What would we give for batsmen (I refuse to call them “batters”) like them now instead those perennial no hopers playing this week, you know who I mean.😡

I can't think of ANY other side who wouldn't have given that target a go - except of course, England!
273 off 75 overs is not a huge target and I'm surprised they didn't give it a go, especially as they play more one day and white ball slogging these days.
The best entertainment came from a spectator and his yellow cagoule!

At least the Gentleman had the good grace to acknowledge that he and his cagoule provided the most entertaining part of the afternoon !! And what a lovely smile as well.
Agree fully with your other comments
Just hope the young lad who has been suspended gets a place in future squads soon and actually gets to play as well ~~ Unlike one chappie named Alex Hales

Really felt sorry for the black caps yesterday , declare with a challenging but far from impossible target and what do England do ...drop anchor. Why it's not as if there were match points involved , basically just a friendly bit of match practice. England could have at least given it a go , offering some entertainment to the spectators . It's a sorry state of affairs when you have to rely on a chap getting tied up in his cagoule to do it . Mind you it was priceless 😁... Sorry rant over.

Being realistic though why would Joe Root want to chase the win with that batting line up based on their pathetic performance in the first innings. Just under half the side contributed 2 runs yes just 2.
Far better to go into the next match on level terms than already one down.
William Shakespeare knew a thing or two about cricket when he said “ discretion is the better part of valour” 😉

What I can’t understand is why Butler and Bairstow can be resting when they are playing for their respective sides in the T20 Blast. Mind you Bairstow top scored last evening in the Vikings’ win.
The other thing that is beyond comprehension is how a couple of the current side are allowed anywhere near an England team. They are consistent, however, failing again.

Now now Roger, you know how tiring it can be watching Footy, Tennis, Athletics on telebox at the same time as listening to the grass growing at square leg . You stated that a couple or so in the test team shouldn't really be there, but are they not providing the perfect excuse for the return of Stokes, Buttler whenever they feel the urge ??!
Must go now it can take ages for the Cynical ones amongst us to go to sleep

24 hours later and the only cricket A B M has seen was entirely due to our Antipodean Friends !! This present debacle is proof, should proof be needed, that the 'Rotation System' of team selection is capable of ensuring that the worst of any squad will get plenty of 'caps' and talented, workers get only the minimum. And to think that the present Selectorial Set-up, following on from the previous Bubble-fixated tours is barely a good year old. Heaven preserve our Team when the system is fully bedded in. RANT ONLY JUST STARTED
Sorry for shouting

As I see it rotation has come about as a result of the fact that certain players have been away playing in the IPL.
I googled the ECB central contract and found that it’s worth £700,000 per annum excluding bonuses. I read somewhere that with bonuses players on such contracts could expect to trouser north of £900,000 and the captain would get £1million+
The question must be what sort of contract at such levels of remuneration allows players to tire themselves out to the extent that they can’t fulfil their obligations to the nation team by playing for mega bucks in the IPL
Anyhoo there’s little chance of the current team earning any win bonus with their present level of play.😳

Although not Test Match related it's great to read that Jimmy Anderson took his 1000 first class wicket today. Bowling, appropriately enough, from the James Anderson End, the 38-year-old's figures of 7 for 19 were his best at Old Trafford. He becomes the 216th bowler to take 1 000 first-class wickets, the last pacer to reach the mark was Andy Caddick in 2005!!
Congratulation to such a great bowler.

Seven , or so I believe, of the total ODI squad including management { ?? } now tested +ve for something called Covid 19, what ever that may be, so now a new squad nicely assembled ready for the commencement of The Pakistan Series -- I just wonder who will be playing who and, given the weather, when ??
Many Good wishes to Jimmy A for a long & successful career, The lad seems to doing his best within the C19 Rules & Regs ! { more than some muppets I can think of }

Ben Stokes has done a great job captaining the England ODI team to two successive comfortable victories over the Pakistan team. Today was his 100th ODI and everything he has done as captain has turned to gold. The messages he would have given the team, to go out and play with freedom, have got through.The tactical bowling changes and the field changes he's made have been really impressive.

Sorry, Nellie, but Brian has not seen or heard of any sport today until the 7:00 pm clipping of Tour de F, cos he was out enjoying himself . If he does not fall asleep over his keyboard, then he might, just might stay awake for the 11:05 clippings of the 2nd match versus Pakistan.
