If it helps anyone on a budget, who is thinking of booking a return crossing to France by the longer 'Western Routes', Porstmouth - Caen is again good value this year. Camping Cheques are no longer available, but by adding 4 actual site nights to the crossing, my total price was £263.68. With 4 site night vouchers it would be £280.30

The actual crossing was £192.50 in both cases

Outfit is 4.5m car + 7.5m caravan, 2 people, no dogs, no children

This was Ports-Caen 14.45 crossing Sat 27th April, return 08.30 24th June. Price includes 2 nights at Riva Bella, and 2 nights at site C28 near Carcassonne on way to Spain.

Yes, Riva Bella has its issues with migrants, but we have done this route for last 2 years without any issues from them.

For anyone going east, Harwich/Hook of Holland was a similar price, last time I checked.

I'm not sure it will particularly help others, and I'm not posting details of my dates, but outward Folkestone to Coquelles (Eurotunnel) (without caravan) £46.00 plus £18.00 for the cat.  Return price Coquelles/Folkestone £46.00 plus £18.00 for the cat.

This is part of a Frequent Traveller package of ten single trips, shared with friends.  We purchase six trips, they purchase four - but if either of us wanted more it would cost the same £46.00 for each crossing.

We booked to go Hull to Zeebrugge return, out early May home end June car/caravan + 2 adults, outside premier 4 berth cabin £461.39 or  add 4 vouchers £452.59, vouchers cost £87.80 for 4. As said before why would you not, even if you don't use the vouchers (we will) its  a good price.

Agree with all the above prices for Portsmouth/Caen. However the ferry fare on its own is just £230 then you can use what sites you want from the ACSI book which are probably cheaper than site night vouchers

Whichever method the above route is a good price. Poole/Cherbourg is also a good price, it's just the timing on the return is poor

Harwich/Hook of Holland is about the cheapest of all. Off peak (May) 9.15 out 14.15 back (July 4th) £170.90

Harry, the 'poor timing' depends on where you are travelling to...we only have 90 mins drive so home by 11pm.

for those with longer distances (Notts?) apparently you can stay on the dock till morning....just as we do for the 8:30 departure.

outward leg, £144....although poor old MHERS don't get the 'special' deals being mentioned above.....

what annoys is that our MH is 6.4m long yet a car/caravan combo (say 12/13m) can cost much less and include vouchers...

still, it is the caravan clubwink (with a new logo.....frown

Yes but....We are going in August to join up with grandchildren.

The Club can offer me a fare of £340 on the Caen route at the cheaper times without vouchers

Or the Club can offer a fare of £410 at the same timings with 4 vouchers (which are only two site nights at that time of year so those two nights cost £70)

    I will skip the vouchers.

We have tried just about all the routes across and when we work out the time, fuel, site fees etc the ferries have done their homework as there is very little in it.

We find the best route for us is Hull, be it Rotterdam for northern Europe or Zeebrugge if we are heading South. We haven't yet tried it in the depths of winter but at all other times it works out a good choice. We are fair sailors so don't suffer with long crossings. I think it depends on where you live which route you choose.

Moonstone those Hull-Zeebrugge prices are excellent. When I checked recently, with the 4 vouchers it was £460ish leaving in April. Its an excellent relaxing route.

    Did you book before Xmas?

We now always do Poole - Cherbourg and like Boleroboy we only live 69 miles away from Poole and make use of the terminal o/n parking both ways.    However, because we use this route twice a year, we make use of BF Club Voyager membership, which costs £75pa (there is an initial £75 to pay at the start in addition to your annual subscription) but if doing it twice a year works out a very good deal.

I have just booked our next trip for mid Feb 19, with an 8.06m MH plus rear mounted bike rack and a 4 berth cabin with shower and it cost just £165.   (£147 + £18).    We will arrive at the terminal about 7pm, have a meal and a drink and a good night’s sleep.   There will be about a dozen overnighters there with us.     Next morning at 6.30 we get into line and board.    Straight to our cabin and a shower, then down one deck for a good breakfast which is also discounted by 10%.    Arrive at Cherbourg at 13.45 local and head for Camping Nantes, 217 miles on a very good toll free road.    Camping Nantes is a good all year ACSI €20 site with 16 amp elec.

We would like to use the Poole-Cherbourg crossing, possibly next year, and don't mind stopping on the dock area overnight but we owld be a little worried about security for our bikes which we transport in the caravan but obviously need to remove them and secure them if stopping overnight. We have quite good locks etc. but how secure is the port area at Poole for things like that?

We have just changed our crossing from a March one to one in early September and was surprised that the Portsmouth-Caen route didn't pick up an increase in fare bearing in mind that September is far more popular than early March going out. Not complaining though.

Yes - we booked mid-November through CMC mainly because when I'd been researching, they were so cheap I thought why wait - they're bound to go up!

We like travelling by ferry and often use the Hull - Rotterdam service to visit our son in Germany.  10 mins from home to ferry, night on the ferry, then 3 hours drive to Bielefeld.

Hi Wherenext, I couldn’t give you any guarantees, but the whole area is well lit and there are patrols at night.    Even the local police have been seen driving around.    Just past the ferry port is a big marina and then the road is a dead end, so no passing traffic other than the ferry and marina traffic.     If the bikes are locked to your van wheel, using a daisy chain of D and cable locks, I would think you would be OK.    If anyone tried to nick them you would hear them.     Our E-bikes are always locked onto the back of our MH and never had a problem.

Booked a couple off weeks ago the Hull-Rotterdam ferry in April at £296 return,2 adults, inside 4 berth cabin ( I don't do the top bunk on a two berth anymore)...

FYI..the other club have issued a list of ferry crossing 'offers' on their web site. Just booked Poole-Cherbourg for D-Day Anniversary week £120 and Caen return in July again at £120.. No vouchers or sites booked with club..

    Hi, doing a comparison for my planned 2019 trip. BF price is;

    Outbound Sailing
    Vehicle and Passengers 305.00 GBP
Inside 2 berth cabin with ensuite facilities, bunk style beds 1
    55.00 GBP
    Return Sailing
    Vehicle and Passengers 325.00 GBP
    Total 685.00 GBP

Club price for same is £355.20 BUT that includes 4 vouchers costing £87.80.That makes the ferry £267.40 so a saving of £417.60.

So, if you take the 10% off the BF price by using a BF code its £616.50 so even if I did not use the club site vouchers I am still looking at a minimum saving, over the BF/code price, of £261.30.

As I said this is for my trip using Plym-Rosc return. In regards to why it’s cheaper for a car & van than MH it seems to be because the BF crossings are sometimes ‘caravan goes free’ and using these sailing will be cheaper.

Just made a comparison and assuming a 5m car and 7.5m van ,reserved seats and one dog came to £490 booked direct with BF.

    The club price for an ITX ferry & vouchers fare was;

Poole to Cherbourg ferry (Brittany Ferries)

    Departs: 26/03/2019 08:30

    Arrives: 26/03/2019 13:45

    Ship Name: Barfleur

    2 Adults

2 x BRIT Reserved Lounge Seat

    1 x D

Cherbourg to Poole ferry (Brittany Ferries)

    Departs: 27/06/2019 18:30

    Arrives: 27/06/2019 21:45

    Ship Name: Barfleur

    2 Adults

2 x BRIT Reserved Lounge Seat

    1 x D

    Overseas Site Night Vouchers4 vouchers
    Current package price
    £350.30

So, if you don’t use the vouchers you save £140 but if you do it’s more.

Cheers. We have used Poole before but many moons ago and I think it was a bit later sailing time as we always take bikes and I can't recall having to sort out security for them for that trip. Nice to have another option.

I'm with Bill, it's a pretty secure area....but why move your bikes from out of sight into everyone's view?

lock them together with your D locks inside the caravan and no one could get the conjoined pair through the door, could they?

If you think someone could cut the lock, what's to stop them doing just that when bolted outside to a car/MH as Bill describes?

if I was worried, I wouldn't advertise I had them in the first place.

ps, Bill....may be at BP when you arrive...will keep in touch.
