Bilbao Issues

Hi, just returned from a rally where I was speaking to a guy who I knew had been on an extended visit to Spain.

Due to issues with sites he needed to travel back from Bilbao instead of Santander and this meant staying a few nights on the port prior to leaving. One night his wife heard a noise and upon checking they found a guy in the process of trying to tie himself to the caravan chassis.

The guy asked him not to say anything but, of course, he waved to attract the attention of some nearby uniformed officers and the guy was taken away.

he then realised that there seemed to be quite a lot of people in uniform and over the next couple of days regularly saw people being led away from the area he was in.

These issues are of course apparently quite common but it is the first I have heard of them spreading so far West as this.

Spain is now the primary entry point for migrants crossing the Med so only a matter of time before their ports to the UK were targetted.

However it's a long wait on board for those who suceed in getting onto the ferry. Presumablg once on board and at sea they'll have time to gain access to a lorry.

The Telegraph reported a year ago that 1251 would-be stowaways had been detained at Bilbao in the first nine months of 2017 .

Well known as issues.  I was in the south of France near the Spanish boarder and stopped at a service station.  There were loads of what were obviously illegal migrants loitering about in both the lorry/caravan areas, but also in the toilets where they were washing.  Nobody from the service station did anything...think they had given up given the volume.  No police either

In December last year we could not find a site open near Bilbao so stayed on the port overnight for the early morning ferry. There were a couple of people wandering around at three a.m. In the morning and they were sitting under a Winnibego when boarding was taking place. We were not searched at all in Spain but at Portsmouth when the customs officer told us three men had managed to get on the ferry and they were now looking for them.

Hi David, My thought as well but the couple spent 9 hours trying to find a site that would take their 8m twin axle van without success. I think it was around the Assumption Day holiday period as well and, as they had been in Spain for over 6 months, probably didn’t feel too fussed about a few days. I believe that there were other outfits there as well but don’t  know for how long.
