We are going to the Algarve for the first time with our van for October and November, how busy will the camp sites be at that time of year and does anybody have campsite recommendations?

    Look at:

    https://orbitur.com/

They may still do a "passport" where you buy nights at a reduced rate which we found was good value.

Portugal sites may not be up to the highest standards (agree with AD about Turiscampo - the highest standard we found) but were generally clean.

We stayed at their Caminha (before heading back to Santander via Picos de Europa), Foz do Arhelo (for Obidos) and Guincho (for Lisbon), plus  Villa Nova de Gaia (for Porto)

    Other groups are available:

    https://coimbracamping.com/reservas/prices/

And Google for campsites near places you want to stay or see.

Plus we went down through Spain and returned via Portugal.

Also don't forget about the tolls -there are several threads and methods to pay them (could not recommend "winging it")

I have not been to Portugal in the van for nearly 10 years, time flies, but since you have not had many replies I thought older stuff is better than nothing for you to follow up on. Check out the campsites I have stayed on >here<. My understanding is the site at Quateira is still open but much building has gone on around it.

Turiscamp would be my recommendation. Very good facilities, well run, toilet blocks fabulous. We  had a van but hired a small car from reception in order to better travel round the coast to some spectacular beaches. The rates were very reasonable.
