I don't think Peedee was referring to a decline in MH ownership (either within the club or without) but the opposite...

there must be an element of truth here, Peedee...

a caravanner who's 'always used SP' and then changes to a MH may well continue in the caravan vein going through the same water process TW (as stated above) and others have happily left behind.

I think that it simply depends on size of fresh and waste tanks, daily water consumption and how often they wish to drive off pitch. For me with some having 130 litres of fresh and 80 litres of waste that would easily suffice for my longest stay of 15 nights and probably more but the waste would be the limiting factor. However some claim to use 40 litres a day and so their waste must be 30 litres a day.

But serviced pitches on club site have not been available that long ,but have seen an increased instalation and in use since "motorised"caravans have become the latest must have wink

as I said, this is a polarised opinion....traditional CC members moving to MHs might well feel they still must to 'do the water thing' (even if they don't need to) and are happy to pay for service pitches, which they well have migrated to if they'd kept the caravan. these are the folk who may well buy 'gin palaces' as they try and replicate caravan life with a MH, hence the SP thinking.

OTOH, there are folk moving into 'must have motorised caravans' from the other end of the market...tenting or never camped at all (as we did). these are likely to be buying smaller PVC/VW type vans and may be using site showers and not much other water/waste in the van itself.

along with shorter tours with more stops the need to be plumbed in isn't there.

this is the other significant growth area in MHs.

so, we can have large growth yet not all that translating into SP requirement.

in fact, the opposite may well be true, in that these campers really don't need much of anything to enjoy their short stays on site prior to moving to the next part of the tour, hence my agreement with Peedee in that smaller (but still legal), cheaper (£15 tops) pitches may well become very popular.

it will be interesting to see CCC take up of their cheapest non-EHU, grass pitch offerings.

I agree there seems to be a significant growth in small campervans, we have noticed on our travels that the VW California is becoming quite a regular visitor to sites (if it has an off side wiz bang it is a California )  and note that Ford are now going down that route with the small transits, surprised and that type seem to be the ones who leave sites for the day and are also seen on sites that the  larger type of motor caravan seem to be avoidingcool

May be they are starting to replace the Chelsea tractors on the school run as the next status symbol wink

Strangely the MHs that I see on SPs are not gin palaces. They are likely to be medium to small quite often.

No idea why anybody should think that those moving to  MH from  caravan are incapable of working out that their need for water replenishment might have reduced. For some of course they will still need to refill. Ex caravanners are no more unaware than new motorhomers. Most caravanners don't use SPs with 40 litre aquarolls. Why should they suddenly feel the need when moving to a MH with 100 litre tank? It could be that tbey are high users of water and waste and find moving the MH every few days a chore?

JVB66 you are so right! At least where I live (Hebburn- a small suburb beside Jarrow south of Newcastle).

This area is flooded with VW campervans (all different models) and I can't imagine it's to do with holidays since we are a gritty, former shipyard industrial area with limited tourist appeal.

Nevertheless the local supermarket car parks and streets beside local schools appear to be seeing a growing number of VW campervans and similar vehicles....

But I digress: in response to the original post I have to confess I am an advocate of choice. Sometimes I want grass and limited facilities, sometimes I want all singing and dancing fully serviced pitches and sometimes I want to wildcamp in a tent. Variety as they say....

I have theory as to why MHs require an SP. There is a high top peugout panel van MH opposite us who arrived after 3pm today. I know that they walked off site and we saw them at a bus stop. At around 7pm tonight the fella took a 5 litre collapsible bucket, filled it from his waste tank and walked 120 yards to service point and back. He repeated that to total 6 trips (I may have missed earlier trips). I presume that he finds it more convenient doing this than putting stuff away and taking van to empty every coupleb of days

Maybe he has read about the exercise that as you get older is required to slow down muscle  wastage, so it might be better to take out serviced pitches, to encourage older members to get a bit of exersise, and make for a longer and healthier lifecool

curtain twitching is alive and well and coming to a site near you....undecided

times, date, exact size of bucket, number of trips, yardage to MHSP.

    the perfect eye witness?

light or dark hair? colour of jacket? shorts or trousers?

Alan, one swallow doesn't make a summer....

why on earth would a guy who obviously revels in his own method be the slightest bit interested in a SP at £3.90 a night...wink

he's got it down to a (easy) 'T'.wink

I first saw the chap coming back to his MH with what looked at first like a kids bucket and wondered why he had gone to fetch water rather than use his sink tap for such a small bucket. Then I realised that he had rubber gloves on and thought 'I wonder how many trips he will make'. He may have made some before the one I saw him return from.

I had a good idea of yardage as I presently don't walk too well and so c,had onsidered previously on arrival which of two service water go fill aquaroll at.

Sorry though no idea what chap was wearing other than rubber gloves as I was not interested in those aspects.

I need to fill and empty about every three days which would usually suffice for a stop at a site with, possibly one trip with a bucket/ jerrycan if staying another day or so. During a longer stay on a site, it would be probable that I would take the MH off site and could empty and fill at that point. A serviced pitch would most certainly be overkill.

Just noticed a Firestorm MH with a 51 litre waterhog stood alongside ready to top up. Presumably he doesn't want to take awning off and side away to top up.

as CY said, in that circumstance a SP is overkill.

Pulling my leg? Was it the one with bells on as I didn't hear them ring.

I think for many of us a SP is overkill if paid for.

I elected to use and pay for a serviced pitch on one site in the Summer purely for pitch location on a non club site

    yet, they are 'in demand'...

if 'many of us' think they're overkill, then (as I said a while back) this is a polarising topic....love 'em or hate 'em.

as long as there are always sufficient non SP pitches for those that hate 'em, that's fine.

having said that, our club site use is getting so small these days it's of little worry.

apart from our usual few days in a 'market town' nr Xmas we are using CLS and THS sites almost exclusively now...

you might even get a tap on/close to your pitch (and loads more room) for peanuts...smile

I only ever use a serviced pitch if it is free but availability of SPs has no bearing whatsoever of choice of site.

We always use our own facilities and the filling/emptying only takes a few minutes. At my current fitness levels it could hardly be classed as a chore.

MA's post shows that active caravanners may not find the water ritual a chore and not see SPs as an advantage....certainly not for nr £28 a week.

i can see the convenience if it starts to become hard work or are staying for a few days or more.

OTOH, assuming JVB is not looking at a row of serviced pitches! he posts (on a snapshot surveywink) that 60% of visible MH prefer to manage their own waste water than use an SP.

of the other 40%, some (half?) may well just drive to the MHSP on exit...

ergo, 80% of MHs don't use SPwink

as expected, bearing in mind their self sufficiency credentialssmile

I am supposing these are large motorhomes ?  We dont have the space(or the inclination) to tote a wastemaster about, as well as an onboard waste water tank (why?)  When we changed from caravan to large motorhome, for a while ,we carried a set of Fiamma 27 litre blue and a grey fresh and waste water carriers, but found we hardly used them. So now we have a PVC (van conversion) we no longer carry them at all. There is no 'correct' way of doing things. But being forced to pay 'extra' for facilities that you dont use is not fair or equitable. So, a percentage of serviced pitches is fair, too many and it becomes unfair. And more expensive for everybody. By the way, for health reasons I am now unable to lift Manhole covers to drain the waste tank....so hurry up with the drive over grilles.

I’ve noticed that JV👍🏻, I guess they can’t be doing with the faff of waiting all morning to fill up a mega tank when a water hog full will cut it👍🏻😊
