Best Journey to Royan France

We have a difficulty organising a trip with our caravan that does not include wasted time on route. Trying short and long (overnight) ferries always leave us with time to spare between campsites. It is too far for me to do the journey in one go, but we seem to always be too early at the campsite meaning stopping at an aire for a few hours. This year for our overnight in Le Mans we paid for two nights so we could leave later to get a night Le Havre/Portsmouth Ferry. Any ideas how we can better use the time?
