Road Toll Box for Hungary

Our motorhome is over 3.5 tonnes so we need to pay road tolls in parts of Europe. We've used the electronic boxes in Poland, Czechia and Austria, and whilst "they don't make it easy" its been workable and we are travelling safely within the law.

We are about to go into Hungary. Looking at the Hungarian website, the procedures seem quite complicated and we are a bit confused. Has anyone used the toll box system in Hungary and can give us some advice?

1. It looks as if the box needs to plug into power via the cigarette lighter ... is this the case? ... as it would mean we couldn't use the GPS at the same time

2. Is there an option to buy Vignettes for the sections of road we will travel on, rather than use the box? If so, are the Vignettes "open" or date restricted. The web-site suggests you have to specify roads and dates in advance?

We do want to travel in Hungary ...its sounds like a lovely country ... but is the process harder than necessary.

Cheers, Colin

I only looked at the Hu-go.hu website - the English version. You are right- it's a lot more complicated for vehicles over3.5 tonnes. It always is.

But it says you can pay up front without installing a toll box for a route stated in advance, otherwise the box needs preloading with money and plugging into a cigarette lighter in the vehicle as you say.

It gives a phone number for an English speaking Customer Service line - they will know more than I do for sure. Good luck with it - perhaps you can let us know how you get on.

Rang Customer Service today ... very helpful guy ... heavily accented English but I think I understood it all. The upshot is:

Electronic box costs 150 Euro, no refund on box or unused credits and needs to plug into cigarette lighter. Very flexible, but not really an option for a short term trip

Android Phone App. Not an official product (run by a 3rd party) so he couldn't tell me much about it and didn't seem to recommend it.

    Vignettes ... two options:

    1. Buy a Vignette each day (from petrol stations). This has to cover a specific route for the day (no deviations) and only lasts for that day. Next day, go to the nearest petrol station and buy that days ticket etc.

    2. Buy Vignettes in advance ... But, you have to plan your route and timetable and cannot deviate.

So ... we'll go for the Vignette per day option.

    Cheers, Colin
