Dogs on Portsmouth - St Malo overnight ferry
Hi
We are taking 2 terriers on overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo on our first overseas trip with a caravan. I am looking for some tips on
1. are there a services on A3 or M3/m27 near Portsmouth to walk the dogs before boarding? or are we better to walk them round the ferry terminal once we are through Customs?
2. where is the best places to walk dogs when we get off the boat at St Malo?
If you have any tips on what to feed the dogs before loading that would be great. I am thinking to feed them in morning of departure, walk them and then not feed them directly before loading (or give them water). Then give them some water before disembarking the boat. Then stopping as soon as possible to give them a walk.
Any help/advice appreciated.
Cheers,
john

I have only done Portsmouth to Santander/Bilbao so cannot comment about St Malo. The ferry boarding process makes it difficult to give the dogs a good walk at Portsmouth so a stop before you get to Portsmouth is recommended. Firstly you queue to go through check-in. Then you wait in a queue before customs and then finally you wait in another queue before actually boarding. Each time it is difficult to know how long you will have to wait in the queues as the boarding process can seem a bit random and you are not allowed to vacate the car when you are in the final queue after customs. The best chance for exercise is immediately after you have gone through check-in and are waiting in the queue for customs. The whole terminal area is just tarmac - there is no dog exercise area like at the tunnel crossing.
My dog tends not to each much when travelling but I always make water available whenever we stop.
Enjoy your trip.
