I am a lone traveller and have been to France many times but never to Ile d'Oleron.  Advice re suitable sites near to coast and shops/restaurants would be most appreciated.

You might like St Denis d'Oleron at the far northern tip of the island - you have a choice of the municipal camping or the Motorhome aire, both by the sea and close to bars and restaurants. But out of season you can explore all the way down the west coast of the island as well, although in mid summer it's a very busy place.

Thanks for your swift reply 'eurotraveller'.  I should have made clear I'm going late May this year.

For what it is worth as it was 10 years or more back, we enjoyed Camping Le Suroit. Not too sure how far shops physically were away as we went there with bikes, which I suggest the island is ideal for and perhaps not without. The car probably never moved!

It was an ACSI discounted site and may still be, the sea is very "close" and the bar a very pleasant place to pass the evening.

It warrants a bit of Googling and the current details checking to be sure what you will find these days.

Edit; yes still on ACSI's discount card.
