It remains to be seen how long delivery takes, but the deed is done.

The only frustrating & time consuming part was that having registered with the UK Gov Gateway thingy in order to renew my passport, it firmly failed to recognise the ID  or password etc I typed in, so I had to re-register; this was a lot easier than the original process, and they've sent me an email saying they're processing it all, so fingers crossed...
The photo is hopefully going to be picked up from my passport one, which is only a few months old.

Slightly alarming to have to state that I've cut my paper licence in half, to send it back before I've got the new one, though! I'm keeping a good grade scan of it all in one piece first.

That is exactly what happened when I got my licence when I was 70, all straightforward. Margaret has diabetes so has to answer lots of medical questions so I don't know whether that was an issue? It seems now you have to validate your identity via a third party one of which is the Post Office, another is Experion. The process has to be done on a mobile phone so that you can take photographs of your passport and then I think the next stage was likely to take a photo of the person concerned so they can compare the two, although we didn't get to that stage. There was no option of uploading a scan of the passport and trying to position the mobile phone camera in exactly the right position proved unsuccessful.

AFAIK, on renewal of licence at 70, you should be careful to maintain the ability to drive over 3.5t (a group I can't remember is removed if you use the "normal" system?)

I'll be checking carefully, if/when we get there.

Have always used IDP with MBH's green licence which she refuses to give up.

I think you will find you are given an obvious choice when the reminder comes. I volunteered to drop down to a standard licence as I did not envisage needing to drive a larger vehicle. One thing I would advise is to always scan/copy your old licence as proof of your entitlement just in case there are any mistakes at the DVLA end. Personally I have always found the DVLA very good but you do hear some strange stories about them refusing a particular level of licence because there is no proof.

Your process had to be done on a mobile phone? Hmm - that would rule us out, ours are both very basic phones, no internet ability. I got through the Experion process fine for my passport, however, using a desktop machine. Still had to take the photo & form in to the Post Office for the actual passport.

A scan wouldn't be taken as evidence. There was a period when people's entitlement got lost and they had to retake driving tests - which for motorcycles is a very expensive process.

The best way to renew is to "lose" your current licence and apply for a replacement - then if the new one is missing anything you can miraculously "find" the old one again....

The idea is to photo copy the paper licence at the post office & get them to sign the copy, that way you have a trusted person that can verify the original paper live in the event of a ***k up.

You'd need to get a notarised signature for it to be valid otherwise you may end up in endless arguments. For example, DVLA may say your original was a fake......

My way is simpler and gives absolute security.
