Help - Winterhoff Friction Pads won't go in!

Me, yet again!

So I decided that doing a 120mile round trip to get the dealership to replace the friction pads was silly when the online guide made it look really simple. So they posted them to me. With my Dad on hand for moral support I set to with hammer and screw driver. Not as simple as tap out, and the guide didn't mention you need to engage the stabiliser to access the hole to tap the pad out, but eventually I got them out.  Then for the easy bit of just push the new ones in and 'Klick'.  Hmmm.  Eventually gave up after both my Dad and I tried for ages.  Is there some knack to this?  I didn't want to tap them in with a hammer as was worried about damaging the pads?  Help and guidance would be much appreciated as now I have to replace them and can't tow it anywhere to get help!  We were due to go on our first trip this weekend and its not looking promising :-(

    You do have the correct parts? Do your new pads look the same as those that came out?

    have you tried lifting the arm back to vertical so no pressure on the new pads?

    I replaced mine and hard two finger or one thumb pressure was needed. Once getting the old out I scraped around the seating area to remove any caked up pad dust so the new would seat correctly, if not seated correctly then the clip will not go through far enough to expand and lock into place.

    Sorry, but it took me 10 minutes including the cleaning of the pad seats.

    Thank you so much Metheven!  I spent 45mins on Friday afternoon trying again, but this time with emery pad, brake cleaner and no small amount of stubbornness on my part I got them fitted.  I hope they last a long time?!  Without your tip we wouldnt have gotten away and I would have had a very disappointed little girl. As it is, although we had to spend the 1st night in late night arrivals, we successfully had our 1st weekend away.
