Dogs on the ferry

Hi all, just like to ask your advice on where to leave the little fella on the crossing, don't fancy leaving him in the car, is it ok to put him in the van with a few toys and an old hoody of mine to cuddle up to.Been on the train a couple of times and it was ok but just fancied the ferry again, only Dover Calais so not too long, what do you reckon...H

    We leave our Border Collie in the car.

    We use P&O and they give you a notice to identify that there is a dog in the car. He is used to being left for a short time in the car by himself and when we are packing up is always anxious to jump in so as not to be left behind! I think in the caravan he would be far more concerned. When we return to the car on the ferry he is usually fast asleep.

    Also when you are parked on the ferry there are a lot of people about and space to open caravan and car doors can be tight 

    To make his journey more comfortable we have his bed on the back seat and have given him a good walk shortly before boarding. We leave him unharnessed in the car and of course remember to switch off the car alarm as it can sense movement.

    We always have taken our dogs into the dog friendly areas of a ferry,as tend to be more "relaxed" than down with all the car alarms that keep firing off because the owners have not desensitised themundecided

    Unfortunately on the cross channel Dover to Calais routes that is not an option.

    When we went to Islay with Cal Mac the dog was allowed inside the ferry lounge and the journey was longer than from Dover to Calais.

    It depends on the operator and route.

    Sounds like my dog. Caravan arrives from storage, dog either sits herself outside the caravan door, or in the car if the rear hatch is open.

    Always leave in the car, even on the longer Portsmouth / Caen crossing. No problem, always asleep when we get back to the car.

    Unless you're with Calmac that isn't an option.

    That's why we always use the tunnel when crossing to the continent. cool

    Mmm, I just don't like the idea of leaving in the car for a couple of hours, maybe just bite the bullet and take the train, anyway cheers chaps..

    We do the tunnel these days, now we have the dog.  She generally doesn't like being left at all - especially in the car.
