A move to the Dark Side
OK not really as the title but we are realy thinking of trading in our caravan for a used motorhome.
Its got to be less than £30000 including the trade in and this would be our last purchase due to our age etc. What , if any, have your experience been moving over to the darkside. What should I look for as I don't want the hassle of trying to sell the van privately. Looking forward to comments please. Oh, a four berth would be nice and something we can stand up in, I'm 6ft swmbo is 4ft and a bit.

Prepare to be enlighten rather than entering a world of darkness! My experince of trading in is it is the most expensive option. It has always been my last resort, better to sell privately if you can but I agree trading in is less hassle.
As far as I am concerned there is only one downside and that is not having a car but choose your sites carefully and it becomes a minor inconvenience and the upsides of ease of use outweigh this.
There is plenty of debate else where on CT about the pros and cons of motorhome verses caravan ownership if you have the time to browse.

I sold my last van using a local dealer as a broker. After paying the 'broker' a fixed sum I made £2.5k more than the part exchange offer. Van sold within a month and the broker was able to sort the scammers out so a very lucrative, relaxed sale for me. Can't advise on the MH as I don't have one except to say if you buy a Fiat based van make sure you have 2 x ignition keys

.....ah......4 berth.......due to age.....
'four berth' generally means a van with sufficient payload for four people, might be tricky at 3500kg..
'due to age' might mean beyond 70 and a loss of B+C1 on license, so restricted to 3500kg....
the two above clauses dont generally mix well....
good luck.

Well Bri, I could tell you my experience but I know from anotter thread that you won’t want to hear what I have to say.
I’ll just wish you good luck and take you to task for your ‘dark side’ title.

We used part ex with a motorhome dealer when we went from a caravan to a motorhome, no problems, we didn't have the time or the inclination to do otherwise. We didn't buy new and our recent motorhome, also nearly new was at such a good price it's virtually held it's value. Look around and start talking about values with a dealer to get the feel of what's ahead.
