Not been to York brue. However, I think it is doubtful it is any noisier than those jets at Gatwick and they started very early and went on late. My concern, would be more about dust, when the weather drys up.

To be fair the OP got it right, 'next-door' not the site itself. It's a very convienient site and in effect very reasonable city centre 24hr 'parking' for car, caravan and awning with its own facilities on 'tap'. For most of us we'd be out during the working day enjoying the many attractions etc. available within walking distance.

I am the OP Micky, I know what the site is like, we've planned a short break there soon and I was disappointed to hear about the building work noise. I don't know what other people do on their hols, we're all different, a city visit for us tends to be more site based...into town, back again etc etc. so not much peace if we're on the site. Hope you enjoy your holiday in Costa Rica, I've enjoyed Moulesy's posts from there.

Fingers crossed we'll enjoy our break too. smile

Just as an aside and for interest only, the NCP car park in the city centre at York Tanner Street charges £26 for 24hr parking and if you a member of their frequent user scheme you can get it at £23.40..

As another aside, P&R at Askham Bar is free, and has dedicated MH parking spaces, small charge into city centre on clean buses every 10 minutes. Car park is safe, staffed and walked regularly.

Since booking this and other sites I've just gone through the booking confirmations with a fine tooth comb. I'd advise others to do the same, it threw up on one site that there'd be no electricity on one day (now passed.) Another has no useable facility blocks at present, but there is a fee reduction. I have also altered our shipping length as it exceeds the 6m limit with the bike rack on the back so hopefully avoids the dreaded pitch allocation. Every little helps.  (I must thank N.T.H for that.) smile

brue, We were there early January and did not find the noise a problem however as the work moves on it may get more of a problem. We were however pitched on the other side of the site to the works. In respect of the size of your van and being allocated a pitch I would think you would have a good chance of being away from the building works but that’s just my opinion. At this point the building works would not deter me going , I hope that helps you.

    Glad I could help. brue.

BTW For York we use a small commercial site, which has 15 large H/S pitches, EHU & free WiFi, but no toilet/shower. It's close to the ring road but for all that it's quiet, and there's a bus stop just down the road with a 1/2 hourly service into town, free to bus pass holder.

We are booked in for first time at RP, so been an interesting thread for us. Although we aren't early risers, hopefully noise won't be too much of a problem for us, and we will be off site during the day. Fingers crossed no floods though! Our visit isn't until July.

we were aware of the pitch allocation issue though!wink

When we were there a year or two back there were only a couple of pitches that were unsuitable for anything but the smallest outfits and they are close to the facilities block by the entrance.

We saw them being used by small campervans, T4 or T5 conversions.

I'd think that even if you amend the length of your outfit there's going to be a risk of ending up on one of these wholly unsatisfactory pitches. They were trying to persuade us to use one but our 6.67m van would have been too long

I was unaware of the pitch allocation till I checked the booking confirmation (can't see it on the site details) which says vans under 6m or over 7.8m will be allocated pitches, I think quite a few might be affected. Last year, at a similar time to this visit, we were able to choose our own pitch.

They may have modified the site since we were there but most pitches would take most outfits apart from two which were appalling.

I suspect the booking allocation details have been changed to warn people of the possbility of being allocated a pitch. I'll have to have another look at the site plan.

Edit: yes it's pitches 1,2 and possibly 3 that will need small outfits and there's only a handful that could take longer ones

I suspect that smaller camper vans might be affected more than us, our van, not including the cycle rack comes in at 5.94 but since the rack is permanently attached I have decided to include this in the length, probably should have done this before as it could affect us anywhere. smile

Those pitches looked tight even with a small campervan brue. They aren't good but I suppose it maximises pitches on a popular site

It's a very crowded site, I just about got a booking, having to take what was available, a few crumbs left to choose from....wink

For those Visiting Rowntree here is a link for the river level in York. It is a little high but I would say normal winter level at the moment. It will flood this bank and the bank opposite Rowntree long before the club site is in danger.

    Brue

I'm sitting in my van now on pitch 12. I have been here since Sunday and saw vans arriving after me on Sunday driving round to select a pitch some small motor homes too. None seemed to have been allocated a pitch. The van next to me is a one man pop up and can not be more than about 4 meters. He chose his own pitch. As for noise from the building site. My opinion is something could have gone wrong because nothing has moved in the time I've been here and according to hhe warden nothing has happened this year. No noise whatsoever apart from a few barking dogs in the park next door. The pitches where I am are the furthest from the building site and would be ok even for your small van.

Stop worrying and just enjoy your time here.

I wonder how long until the hotel owners are complaining about the caravan site next door . . . ?

Probably not, we're there for a few mid week winter days, the park was virtually empty at the same time last year. smile

Especially when all the early arrivals are parked along the road waiting to get into the site at 11:00 and blocking the hotel entrance!!!

We stayed at York Rowntree in early December. It’s a site that we’ve stayed on many times. We pitched in the new bit of the site (pitch 94 I think) and the noise for our entire stay was unbearable. From 8am until after dark we had chainsawing, chipping machines and concrete drilling.  Our van, and it’s contents, shook from the noise and vibrations. We were unable to have a conversation or hear the tv the noise was so bad. The beauty of York Rowntree is having the ability to walk in and out of town when you choose. We had to stay out all day.  The pitches (which border the building work) should not be open and the experience is, in no way, covered by the disclaimer on the booking confirmation.  The noise on the rest of the site probably is though.  I complained to the Regional Manager (mine was the only complaint apparently) and when this wasn’t handled appropriately, it (including the video footage of the contents of my van shaking) was escalated to the Head of Site operations. I have today received compensation for my stay. I love York Rowntree but I will not be staying again until this work is complete.

I'm sorry to hear that, I expect people staying at York are going to get varied experiences throughout the building works. There will be quiet days and then quite the opposite. I'm glad to hear the club recompensed you as it must have been a rotten experience. The reviews will no doubt show up these differences as the year goes on.
