Lake Maggiore

So, all our plans are made for this year until last Friday when a wedding invitation drops on the mat and inevitably, it's the weekend before we're due to go to Cornwall (first week of July)

We went to Croatia/Lake Garda last year (via Lux/Germany/Austria) but think we'd try the A26/A40 Mont Blanc route, the saving in fuel paying for the tunnel (its about 300 miles shorter)

My question is does anyone have any knowledge of good sites (need a large pitch) in the Stressa area and what are the approximate toll charges from Calais to Stressa (thus avoiding the twin vignette charges going through Switzerland) I know pitches are on the small side in Italy, but if necessary I would book 2 adjoining pitches because it's still going to be cheaper then £280 per night in the hotel!

Thank you in advance.

Sites there I don't know, but Class two tolls on autoroutes across France to Chamonix are about €120 each way and then nearly €60 each way for the Mont Blanc tunnel - so € 360 for the return journey just to the Italian border, with Italian tolls on top of that.

By comparison you can easily go toll free (much of it free motorway) to the Swiss border at Basel via Lille, Namur, Luxembourg, and Nancy - and then buying two Swiss vignettes for a return crossing of that country will only cost you about €75 . So it's far, far better value to cross Switzerland . There's no need to avoid that route.

EuroT. Thank you for the advice. Didn't realise the tolls were so much - paying for 2 vignettes to cross Switzerland is good value in comparison :-)

If you go onto the via Michelin app and plot your route it will show total toll charge. Just increase Autoroute tolls by about 50% for the Caravan.

Should you go via Switzerland the route through Basel to Locarno is scenic and quite fast. From Locarno go South along the lake. The initial route to Verbania is slow and winds a lot but after that the road is better.

Can’t help with Stressa, we always stay at Cannobio. If you want to go through France on the way back you can go over the Simplon  pass from Domodossola and around lake Geneva. The pass is straightforward and has been significantly improved over recent years.

Via Michelin has option to put in caravan which then calculates the correct toll charge on your route.

We visited Lake Maggiore last May a lovely area. Stayed at Valle Romantic Cannobio. Travelled there from Lake Garda. Then a short hop to Faido Camping at Gottardo for overnight. Next stop was Eguisheim which I would highly recommend.

Hi we visited Lake Maggiore in May 2014. We stayed at a site at Feriolo called campsite Orchidea. We caught a bus from near the site to Verbania - looked round there then caught the ferry to Stressa (which also stopped at  2 islands Isole Bella and Isole Madre. I think you could also catch a bus to Stress and then the ferry to Verbania.

Our site was on the beach almost with fab views across the lake. Bellisimo! Enjoy your trip.
