Metro Bank - open an account on line

I know lots of people had accounts with the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society because they offered a debit card which gave you transaction fee and commission free withdrawals from ATMs in Europe.  Few other banks offer a debit card with this facility apart from Metro Bank and one snag was that you had to open an account in branch - with branches mostly in the South East of England.  Now there is a facility to open an account on line.

Accounts cost nothing to run, there is no minimum payment each month into the account, and no minimum number of transactions.

We get free card use with our Nationwide bank account worldwide so don't need this but a great tip ValDa.

We have a joint current account with Metro Bank, a requirement of opening a fixed term account.

We have a branch within walking distance so opened in person. Very impressed with their service

    1. A member of staff greets you as you enter
    2. Dog friendly, water and treat supplied
    3. They have a coin sorting machine, no commssion  taken
    4. An area for children
    5. Safety deposit boxes
    6. Knowledgeable friendly staff
    7. The facility to print your cheque book AND debit cards on the spot so you walk out withe the whole package
    8. Not checked recently, but will be when back in the UK, slightly higher interest rates than other high street banks.
    9. Opening of the door and a personal goodbye.  (Or is that just escorting off the premises? 😂)

OH was saying she saw this on MSE, could be a good idea for us as our Nationwide account is not our main account so we no longer qualify for free withdrawals abroad.

We use a Halifax Clarity card and can pay off the withdrawal almost immediately if we have internet access.

An credit card is availabe from the Halifax on-line that does all the above foreign stuff. I have one that I use abroad only because my main banking is with Bank of Scotland (which is the same group within a group) and I like to spread my risks about.
