It may be worth adding that some UK banks still ask you to notify them in advance if you will be using one of their cards overseas, but other UK banks say that is no longer necessary. So it may mean a phone call to check before setting off.

We take a variety of cards with us to Europe, OH takes his Tesco and Asda credit cards, I take my Nationwide one. The reason for this is should we loose one or have it stolen then we can at least use the other one. We also take a Nationwide debit card and prepaid Caxton cards, these are not joint accounts, again just in case of lose or theft. None of our cards have a charge applied to them, we tend to only load the pre-paid Caxton card prior to withdrawing the cash (unless the exchange rates are good) cash carrying is kept to a minimum.
Like others I fully load my freezer and fridge with all the things we like and can't get while away.

Good point about joint accounts. When I had my wallet stolen in Italy there were several ones in joint names (despite some of the second cards being left at home) and most card companies shut down the entire account in such circumstances. Thankfully Nationwide were more enlightened and we could carry on with Margaret's card. If anyone finds themselves in this position might I suggest that before informing the card company that you take out the maximum allowed at the nearest ATM so you have some cash to tide you over.

Credit card accounts are never joint, so the other person would be able to use a card for their own CC Account, as opposed to one that is an additional card on the main cardholder's account.
We each have our own Clarity CC account, plus each have an additional card on the other person's account but do not carry it when abroad for this reason. This is handy as we can use one account for purchases and the other for cash withdrawals. This makes it much easier to repay cash withdrawals if we wish as there are no purchases that would also have to be repaid if a statement was outstanding.

Sorry I should have said additional card holders rather than joint. Getting my terminology mixed up. However I still stand by what I said not all card companies will allow the additional card holder to continue using their card if the other has been stolen. This certainly applies to Tesco and the Partnership Card as we found out to our cost.

I’m vegetarian too and it’s almost impossible to find anything except lasagne and cannelloni when eating out. Quorn is unheard of. So we take a full freezer of food, some cooked meals and plenty of vegetables to last a few days before we have to shop.
I love the supermarkets in France, particularly the large Carrefours.
Holland will be a new one for us this year which I’m looking forward to.
Stuff your fridge and freezer with food, they don’t check at the ports or tunnel anyway, it’s not like the old days.
