A75 South in March

We're off to Spain with the caravan in early March - a little later than we normally go.

Normally we would route down through Lyon but am considering using the A75 this year as we are a little later than previous years.

My concern is whether we will face challenges with "weather" in March (we always come back that way in May) especially considering Europe seems to be having a colder winter than normal - snow in the Sahara being a good example!!

Whilst am tugging with a 4x4, I don't want to take any undue risks and would be interested in views of others on using this route in March.

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

Used the route the last two Marchs. No issues,

We often encounter fog, especially early morning, and at all times of year.

Weather forecasting will give you an accurate forecast, and if you check the weather before setting off it's very very unlikely that you will be caught out.

You could have snow, but equally could have hot sunshine.  We've done the A75 many times over the years, in a variety of weather conditions and seasons, including the winter, and not had a problem - but to go that route without checking the forecast would be foolish.  Actually we did have 'freezing fog' one year, where trees were glassed over with icicles............. but the road was clear and there were gritting lorries and road patrols everywhere. The same 'unknown quantity' applies to weather over the Massif Central as it does anywhere.  Weather is unreliable - but at least the forecasts are more accurate than they ever were.

There are signs on all routes which take you though areas where snow can be a problem - so take heed of these, as well as the forecasts.

However, it sounds as if you will be happier doing the Rhone Valley route - just in case!

We've encountered sleet in the Auvergne at the end of May so you can't guarantee anything. The A75 does cut through the Central Massif so, as Valda suggests, you should check local meteo forecasts near the time. You could quite easily sail through but no-one on here can tell you what it is going to be like in March, particularly as you say that it will be early March.

    Good luck.

Why not use the western route to Spain?

The Météo-France app is probably the best forecast. We use it all the time in France.
