First Timers to Spain

Having retired last year, we are thinking that we would love to go to Southern Spain (Costa Blanca maybe) for approx 3 months, going sometime in November and returning end of Jan - mid Feb. We have quite a large outfit - car and caravan so despite the cost, we aim to book a ferry to Spain and travel from there. This is to avoid any problems with ice/bad weather. We would welcome any advice re booking the ferries, where to stay, in fact any tips would be useful please. We have looked at Florentilles and Camping Las Torres Mazarron but would welcome suggestions. We do not need all singing and dancing sites but do like clean/modern facilities. Thank you in advance.

We went to Spain for October this year and I wrote about it in my blog

    https://jennyandjohngocaravanning.wordpress.com/2017/11/11/spain/

I got most of my information about sites, ferries and travel from John's blog

    https://jondogoescaravanning.com/2015/10/06/welcome-to-my-blog/

    which I thoroughly  recommend.

    Stay safe WTG.

The choice of sites can be very subjective and is really down to personal preference so I hesitate to recommend sites for long stays. As it is your first foray to Spain in the winter for a long stay, I suggest you don't aim to stay at one site all the time but try out a few which you think you might like. You won't go far wrong by obtaining the C&CC winter sun guide or looking on their web site for suggestions. Also browse the forums for threads on the subject.

I have made a point of checking out sites by paying them a short visit, often in the summer, before plunging headlong into a long stay and even on a long stay I will build in a short stay at a site I have not been before just to check it out.

One thing I will say, long stay sites are cheap and it really isn't worth cutting corners sacrificing facilities.

Thank youth everyone that has replied - very useful info and special thanks to "Longtimecaravanner". I am so enjoying reading the blogs and it looks like we have the same van (Coachman 575)

Am site searching now - there are so many to choose from! Some of the reviews scare me may take up the suggestion of trying more than one site.

    Happy New Year to all!

I would recommend the Club’s winter rallies to get you started. We’re doing our second year at the moment revisiting a couple of sites we liked last year and trying a couple of new ones. We also used some stop-over sites on the way down and others we’ve used before from the ACSI book.

Thank you for  taking the trouble to thank me. Although I write it so that I can remember where we went and what we did it is lovely when someone says that they have either found it useful or enjoyed it.

I would love to spend the whole winter away but hubby won't hear of it. Go and enjoy.

It's an excellent idea.   I've been doing it for years - getting the ferry to northern Spain at the start of November and returning home at the end of February.   Although I've tried most costas around Spain and Portugal, my favourite is Costa Del Sol.   I used to go directly to my destination as quickly as possible but now, with four months to while away, I take up to two weeks between leaving the ferry and finally arriving.   I try to wrk out a different route each year.   I don't book any sites so that if the weather isn't suitable for sight-seeing, I just move on.   There are some wonderful places to see  in Spain away from the main roads.   Making plans in advance is almost as much fun as setting out on the journey.    Should you be interested, my current adventures may be seen at https://jondogoescaravanning.com/a-spanish-winter-2017-2018/

PS.   Really bad weather - the sort which is likely to delay your journey and such as that seen for a couple of days just recently rarely happens.   In many years of Spanish winter travelling, I've never not been able to continue my journey.
