Hi all,

We are thinking about heading to France this year with our tourer. We are a family of 5 (3 boys aged 8,5 and 2).We are looking for advice on routes, ferry crossings and potential sites to visit during our stay. Does anyone have any experience they can share with us ? Or any advice on good family sites with plenty of activities for the kids ? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thankyou

France is a great place for familly holidays.  There is loads of info on this forum.  However, to personalise the advice more info would help.  Where do you live?  When will you be going?   What part of France do you have in mind coast, mountains etc?  How long will you be away for?  etc etc.  Look at 'Joys of Caravanning' blog by Dianne.  Give as much info as you can and rest assured the advice will pour incool.

The Atlantic coast will give you beach and cycling but it may well be very hot in July with much higher than UK temperatures.

My personal preference would be to head for Provence, but that's my heart speaking rather than my head! If you do, be prepared for a long journey - it's doable though.  Many family friendly sites near Frejus.  We've stayed at L'Etoile d'Argens before now.  Ideal for kids but very expensive.  There's a 'free' boat from the site down to the beach (although dogs not allowed on the boat so we didn't use it).  Probably won't use this site again as we would be paying for facilities we don't really use, but it suits many families.  Plenty of other sites in the area.

With children of only 8/5/2 years the Atlantic Coast may be far too rough for safe paddling.

I've tried a few times this morning to answer the above post, but each time I got an 'Page cannot be displayed due to an Internal Server Error.

I would have asked the same questions as Comeyras, but also asked what sort of site are you looking for?  Do you want one where the children are entertained, and there is a bar, restaurant and take-away, or would a simpler site with no bells and whistles suit you?  How far do you want to 'tour'?  Roads in France are easier with a caravan so longer distance travel is possible, and you may want to go further south for the sun, or stay in the north for the first time.  Are there any places you think you'd like to see?

There really are sites and areas to suit everyone in France and we love it there!  We've been holidaying in France since 1981 and now have a holiday home there so I'd love to help and I only hope you can read this reply!

    Hi Bandit

As you have not indicated from which area in the UK you will be travelling from it is hard to advise on ferry crossings. As others have said the short crossings to Calais are not always the best option if you then have many miles to your campsite (fuel is no longer cheap in France). For a first family trip to France I would say Southern Brittany around Benodet or Concarneau would be ideal. There are lots of good beach side campsites to choose from. Ferries from Plymouth to Roscoff or Portsmouth to St Malo will leave you about a two/three hour drive to your site. Check out sites in the Clubs "Venture Abroad" brochure or on the overseas booking page. Don't forget you will get a better ferry deal if you book a ferry and site package through the Club. Also price in travel insurance such as Red Pennant. Good luck and have fun.

    Bandit.

Getting there!  When our kids were similar in age  to yours  we went to all 3 areas mentioned above and had great holidays in  Britany, Atlantic Coast and Provence - we also went to Argeles in Languedoc - on 3 week holidays.  Three week will give you time for all areas and going at beginning of July will mean that the first part is out of the main holiday period although it will be busy.  The best beaches Argeles and Atlantic Coast.  Safest beach Argeles.  Best cycling area Atlantic Coast and Britany. As said it will be hot at both Argeles and Atlantic coast.  The Languedoc coast up to near Bezier also offers a great beach and may be less busy than Argeles. Best ferry depends on where you live,  I would look  at Portsmouth Caen or St Malo crossings, but do your sums! Towing a caravan allow 2 and a half days to get to the south and try to avoid returning over a weekend.

Bandit if this is your first time i suggest you have a  look on line at different sites. Have a  look at Yelloh Village they have lovely sites and are family friendly . Also try Alan Rogers,.France have some lovely sites and they are more geared for families than the UK , with water slides fishing on site and also cycling areas plus the beaches are fabulous. Concarneau is a  a favourite of ours we like Les Sables Blancs . There is an outside pool and a  jacuzzi  the beach is a  short walk and a 20 min walk to Concarneau . Audierne is a lovely town too. The Morbihan is another favourite of ours .. As i am not sure where you are sailing from these areas might not be any good to you .. We sail from Plymouth to Roscoff. Good Luck
