Diesel Prices in France & Spain

Has anyone else done any research into the current price of diesel in France and Spain, in readiness for your next trip?       I was quite surprised to see that the Supermarket price is now at best £1.12 per litre and autoroute services can be charging as much as £1.35.    Quite a bit more than my last trip.      From my research, Spain seems to have the lowest price for diesel.  And I am  talking Sterling prices here.

Prices seem to vary more than ever both home and away.    I live in Somerset and our Sainsburys price seems very low compared to the Midlands and up North, ours is now £1.17 a litre.

I am interested if anyone else has any better info/news on this subject.

Unfortunately there's a French government policy to increase the price of diesel by more than the rate of inflation, in an attempt to move drivers over on to 'less polluting vehicles'. Prices started to rise last year, and are now much more comparable with prices in this country.

You'll be lucky to find diesel at much less than €1.23 anywhere in France and as you say, on the autoroutes it could be much more.

Here's the French Government website which gives prices throughout France - you can select a department of calculate a route, and find prices in those ares.

Probably for similar reasons prices are also going up in Spain................... sadly the days of cheap fuel 'over there' seem to have disappeared.  I can remember on our first trips thirty odd years ago we paid approximately a third the price in France that we paid in this country.

Spain is slightly cheaper than France but there is not a lot in it. Best to work on the principle that the per litre cost is the same in Euros as it is in pounds here.

Oil prices are rising quite rapidly the recent more days of the relatively cheap fuel prices may well be over. One consolation I expect the French will come out on strike barricade the fuel depots etc.

Not much you can do about the price unless you are close to a border and can choose when to fill up. I know that Italy is expensive so we always fill up in Switzerland and, of course, Luxembourg is about the cheapest fuel in Europe so is worth a stop. Similarly, France is a bit cheaper than the UK if you avoid the Autoroute so it is worth holding off until you arrive in France and fill up before you leave.

The best advice for France is to use the big supermarkets as there is a massive price difference to motorway prices.

Currently down near Malaga got here yesterday. The fuel prices in France are more expensive than what we have seen in Spain. We filled up in France and paid 1.27 Euro prices we saw ranged from around 1.25 Euro to 1.36 Euro.

Just across the boarder in Spain 2 days ago prices very similar but as you drive away from the boarder the price drops, we paid 1.12 Euro 60k north of Madrid in a town we stopped over.

    Hi BB,

Have not been able to reply sooner because this web site is faulty again.   See my post at the beginning of this thread.     I have gone back to caravanning according to CC and I had no "reply" box.    Part of it has fixed itself in that I now have a reply box but my profile is an old one.     Will email them later.

I live in Taunton and use the Hankridge Sainsburys.    I noticed last night when I passed that they had knocked off 2p per litre since I last posted.   Now £1.15.     The daughter is in Bedford and is paying £1.22 and my bother in the NE even higher.

Did you notice my restraint in the thread about German MHs?!

We paid €1.23 at E.Leclerc in Boulogne last week and €1.30 at Mailleraye-sur-Seine at a Contact Store.

Around €1.60 if you use Motorway service stations.

Just come back from France today (09/01/18), 2 days down from the tunnel to St Malo and back. Prices were €1.58 on the motorway, €1.48 off the motorway and €1.34 to €1.36 at 2 supermarkets, at today’s exchange rate makes it £1.40 to £1.19/litre. Not enough difference to worry about filling up before coming home as only paid £1.21 at the local garage.
