Just got back from our first trip (Florida, car+hotel)
Easter - still thinking about it
May/June will be Italy with the caravan again
Early September - UK (by car, but probably without the caravan)
Early October - somewhere warm to celebrate my wife's birthday
Christmas - maybe overwintering with the caravan in Spain
Most of our trips are fairly spontaneous.

Since I posted previously most of it has changed from April.
Easter - CL in Essex and N. Norfolk
April maybe a rally
May/June- Bitburg and Wolfach and maybe Bavaria after which no idea.
July - North Norfolk
August - Gloucestershire/Wales
September to December - Wherever the fancy takes us

You are quite correct in that we would not now just turn up at a site without booking or phoning ahead. That's because we have a caravan, however if we had a M/H we would certainly tour in a different manner, taking pot luck with sites.
You do have a tremendous advantage over us on this island. a couple of days on the road and you can be almost anywhere and even better without the need to book ferries. So jealous.
You could, of course, go and live over there and have the same advantages as Lutz, David.

We’ve been in the Algarve since 1st January. Here for another 3 or 4 weeks then heading up to Holland until mid April.
April - Long weekend at CCC Teversal on the way home.
June - Barmouth, Forest Fields, Brecon.
August - hopefully Scotland for 2 or 3 weeks.
September - Knaresborough and Beamish. Lincoln show.
October - Devon, most likely with a stop or two on the way.
November or December to about March 2019 - back to the Algarve.

I'm not telling you to do anything at all, just making a suggestion to alleviate your jealousy of Lutz. However thinking about it what you have is envy which is a different thing altogether.

We've always booked in the UK, but years ago, never used to book sites in Europe. However, we started to find that it was difficult to get a pitch on a couple of sites we used to like to visit, so as we knew we were going to do there, we started to book those sites.
Over a period of time, we started to plan in much more detail and so last time we went over (2016) we booked all of our sites, although we did change one site as we went (fortunately we didn't pay a deposit). From our point of view, it made it a bit less stressful, as some years ago, we did find our 'first choice' full and had to search for an alternative there and then. After saying that, we do always tend to go in 'the main season'.

I never plan too far in advance. Booked 6 nights at Sandringham over Easter recently. That the only trip I’ve got planned up to now.

Have only just come across this topic. This years plans so far:
May - Rome (flight/hotel)
July - Brazil (Flight/family accommodation)
Aug - Rugby (Caravan)
Sep - France/Germany (Caravan)
The gaps will be filled with trips in the UK dependent upon weather forecast (we are fair weather caravanners!) and other commitments. We will just phone a few days ahead.
Since we retired we rarely book a site on the continent - only if w want a particular pitch eg lake or river edge - and usually go on 2 long trips a year. We have been all over France, Germany, Spain, Portugal , Italy, Slovenia and Croatia without booking sites. One year we struggled to find a site on Lake Garda but we then realised it was the German Pentecost holiday, we now factor that in our plans! We just book the ferry and have outline plans but if the weather is poor we often change the detail. We have passed trough Austria many times as the 10 day forecast was poor, only last year did we stay and had a great time. Sadly the years are creeping on and we think we may be ending our long trips
Following the Lutz, and later comments, about the advantage of not having to pay for the expensive crossing etc. When we lived in France, near Beziers, Spain, France itself, Italy and points east were our options without having to plan ahead. It made touring southern Europe very easy, and inexpensive.

It was a duff left knee that caused us to change our tow car from a manual to an auto some years back.

You'll have to change to an automatic JVB.

2018 plans now back on ,as went by bus to our Kia dealer who was very understanding of my predicament ,and has "found" an Automatic version and same year as our current car 2013 and has agreed to to a change for £2000,ex motorbility with only 15200 miles on clock against ours at 38000 mls,and will change cars over at our house next week, fully serviced and mot
just need to get towbar and electrics fitted which will be done at our local specialist who is also our c/van dealer
