Places to stay in Spain this January

Hello, we are planning a trip in Jan and are driving through France to get to Spain. I've been booking the sites and it's started to get a bit stressful with how few sites are actually open in the winter period. I need a site to stay at on the 12-13th Jan with a caravan and dogs between Bordeaux and Barcelona to try and break up the journey. Is there anywhere that anyone could recommend that will be open, it would be much appreciated! All the ones on here seem to be shut or open just after our date and when I try to find other sites the reservations seem to come up closed.... thank you Sarah

Are you travelling across France from Bordeaux? If so you'll find quite a few sites open all year.

There is one just off the A6 near Villefranche-du-Laragais, one near Carcassone, plus anothe at Le Ballou near the border.

How far past Bordeaux will you be travelling?

Agree with LaRouletta.  Definitely a good start into Spain - and you get the uphill bit out of the way early in the day!

Have a look at Albarracin in the ACSI book. It looks quite a way off the motorway...but its not really! It's a good journey from Irun, but then its not bad to run down to say La Manga or Mazarron the following day.  We'll be following in early March (can't wait!!)

Agree with Larrouleta as a good stop over. Then you decide if you want to get up early and make the longer drive to Barcelona or have an easy start and head for Zaragoza, with Barcelona the following day.

Sarah, depending on your position re tolls, and comparing like with like, travelling to Barcelona via Urrugne (toll) will add 2hrs to the journey time of 6 hrs if you went via Toulouse and cross the border south of Perpignan.

however, if you travel non toll, the difference is less, Barcelona is 9.5 hrs via Urrugne and just under 8 hrs crossing the Pyrenees via the Somport Tunnel.

i dont know what crossing you are on, nor what stops you have found before (or at) Bordeaux, but its also a blooming long drive from Calais to Bordeaux (10/8 hrs, non-toll/toll) and still a haul from (say) Caen (7/5.5 hrs).

any distance you are adding beyond Bordeaux.....on to Urrugne?....will dictate how many stops youll need...even on the tolls, Urrugne is 7.5 hrs from Caen and 10 from Calais.

good luck, have a great time, youll love it.

WTG, agreed, this was my point....Sarah hasnt specified her crossing start port....Calais, Caen?....

she simply states requiring a stopping point somewhere between Bordeaux and Barcelona.

is Bordeaux a place she has already planned to stop at?

or is the stop requested somewhere to stay as she feels she will have 'done enough' somewhere between these two points?

perhaps a little more detail would help with the 'complete" route and so dial in some better strategic stops...

personally, if i had parked at Bordeaux and was heading for Barcelona (again we dont know if the final destination is even further south (Valencia and beyond) which would also change things) i would just be batting along the toll to Perpignan.....as its the quickest by 2 hrs....but again, depending on how quickly she needs to travel.

BTW, have a wonderful trip yourself, will be in touchsmile
