    You said that it costs £225 a month in fuel Malcolm. That's £2,700 a year and at £5.50 a gallon that is 190 gallons that is around 24.5 miles to a gallon? Seems unlikely as I could probably equal that with my X-Trail.

    If you are spending £225 on petrol for the Smart that only works out at about 25 miles to the gallon. I think I would get that from my XTrail.🤔

    I have to fill up fuel twice a week and each time it costs between £20 to £25. I also thought when I first bought it that I would get much more mileage out of the Smart car. The reality is that I don't. Granted the cost is half as much as the Shogun, so there is some saving but there will be much more saving by switching to EV.

    You could save a lot more by ditching the whole idea of delivering pizzas and get a job in a fixed location. Whether this is in a warehouse or superstore does not matter. Have you not realised that your current job is costing you thousands and thousands?

    Our Smart is the same engine size as Malcolm's and used mainly around town for short trips, with perhaps one longer trip each month to visit the grandchildren.

     I keep records and find we average just under 40 mpg.

    Most people don't buy towcars. People that do are in a small minority & car manufacturers, in the main, don't give a monkey's about them so an electrickery towcar will be at the bottom of any priority list.

    I've 2 Smarts. One is a 84bhp turbo Fortwo, t'other is a Roadster.The Fortwo is for commuting (45 miles round trip, mixture of roads) and general knocking about & gives 45/50 mpg. The Roadster is used these days as a toy but gives similar mpg as the Fortwo. 

    The diseasal 451 Fortwo apparently gives more like 60mpg but is gutless to drive.

    My towcar is also a diesel guzzling 4x4. However, I now only use it as a towcar because there is no longer a need to use it for work or daily use. That saves me money even with my present unleaded petrol Smart. With the Smart Electric the saving will be much greater.

    The £84 a week CL site fee will come to an end on 16th March when I can take up my seasonal pitch. Then there will be the £45 a week saving in unleaded petrol. So total weekly saving will be £129 per week!

    It isn't free, SteveL but in my case, I have paid for the entire year up front both for Northbrook Farm in the summer and Gatwick for the winter. So for me, there is nothing more due!

    You don't have to pay up front. You can choose to pay by instalments. Then you will have to make payments in the future.

    As I get interest free credit plus points through my Tesco Club credit card, it is a very real incentive for me to pay the whole lot upfront and then use the £129 a week saving to reduce the balance on my credit card thereby raising funds for the following years seasonal pitch payment.

    I have now accumulated enough points to get a £35 voucher in my next statement, as a result!

    Personally Malcolm I would have waited before 'investing' in an EV until I could get one with sufficient range for my working day (winter and summer).

    How safe is it to charge the vehicle through the caravan? When you charge a mobile or IPad the plug gets quite hot, and that's for a short time, if you use a pressure washer with an ordinary extension lead, the lead gets hot, again for  short time.

    After witnessing a caravan fire, I would like to know how safe it is, as it would be done overnight when we are all asleep. Has anyone actually done it.

    Don't try to stop them ET, we need plenty of early uptakers for the manufactures to get the massive funds needed to really get the vehicles right for the rest of us, when there is no optionwink

    The more so where the last budget significantly chopped the funding stream coming from IC powered vehicle.

    When I charge my phone or tablet the plug certainly does not get quite hot.

    Your plug may well get warm simply because the charger is inbuilt with the 3 pin plug, heat dissipation has to go somewhere.

    In the case of EV portable chargers it is a 13a 3 pin plug only, the charger limited to 2kW or 3kW is on a length of this lead and out of the charger are heavier leads that then has a socket to plug into the car.

    On saying that, I would not even be happy to leave the phone or tablet type charger on overnight in the caravan, especially if it came from the 'Poundshop'

    My chargers gets hot and it's not a cheap pound land one, PLUS I would never leave any charger on unattended.

    On my laptop, the plug does not get hot but the transformer thing on the cable does.  Makes a good hand warmer!

    When we use a 2kw fan heater the plug on it can get warm, that would be about the same power as charging an EV would use.

    We have an 3 socket 13amp extension cable that we used in  lounge, we keep the small fan  heater there for occasional use if it is cold in the day and we do not want to turn on the CH.

    After leaving it plugged in for a long time, but only using occasionally, I found the plug had become "welded" into the socket!   These were not cheap Chinese appliances.

    To get it free I had to destroy the one socket, the other 2 were fine.  It was rather worrying.  We now unplug the heater when not in use.

    I had similar in a caravan. The fault was due to a new but faulty extension - not a cheap one either. I had to replace the caravan 13amp socket

    I'm sure a new EV would have all kinds of safety measures built into it. These things are inspected and tested rigorously.

    As long as ALL your caravan wiring and sockets are good I would hope that the piece you are plugging into the caravan will be OK. I needing to use an extension I would make my own using cable rated to 16amp.

    Most things these days are "tested under test conditions" then they are released into the real world,  The "problems" appear when joe public gets their hands on themsurprised
