Firstly thanks to all those who have given valuable information in this forum re touring in Europe etc, I now have a comprehensive folder full of relevant information. 1 further question, I now have both Alan Rogers and Archies poi's on my satnav, which is the more reliable in terms of getting you to the front door, or are they much of a muchness ? tks

I've been using Archie's POI for several years now on the satnav and Archie's app on the notebook PC we take with us. Never had a problem.

Hi Rufs, If the instructions say  "Turn right at the church, cross the bridge, entrance on the left", that's what I do.  Seems to get me there without down loading anything. No need to try too hard. Have a good trip.

That is a nice time of the year to go, no need to book anything but the channel crossing. While at Villa Martin do have a look at the two Marjal sites in the area.

Tks peedee got both of those on my file, another that came highly recommended is Camping Playa de Mazarron, we have a 4 legged friend so have to be mindful of this especially as it is processional caterpillar season

We weren't  keen on Playa de Mazarron when we had a look in but that was at the end of October and it was full to bursting so to busy and crowded for us. We stayed at Los Madriles which was much better for us, lovely site with great views and plenty of room as its a tiered site it doesn't feel crowded. Fantastic swimming pool, dogs are allowed.

There's Camping Bahia at Santa Pola, just off the roundabout on the Elche road and a short distance further on there's a MH Aire on the edge of an industrial park. Turn right quarter of a mile after the next roundabout. I've not used either of them, I would add.

We have used camping Bahia at Santa Pola, good site would recommend it. Very steep tiered site but good tarmac roads and good size pitches.

Didn’t know that Alan Rogers did POIs but Archie’s is very reliable. Have used it about 20 times in Europe and it has always been spot on.

Maps are essential of course but many handbooks don’t give good directions. The ACSI books and app for example give quite vague instructions so a SatNav with POIs is very useful for that final approach.

Another vote for Archie's. I have not checked but I imagine that the Alan Rogers POI's would be much more limited in scope than Archie's?

sorry if i misled some folks, HG you are correct Alan Rogers is just a list of sites not a POI that i have on my Snooper satnav, similar to the caravan offering, but please now that i have mentioned Snooper lets not have a major discussion as to why this is not the best sat nav in the world, yes i was one of the guillable ones that bought it because the CC seemed to be recommending it, sorry wont do it again, but i have a map and a compass if things go wrong. Not as yet used Alan Rogers but the info looks to be reasonably comprehensive, you can select the facilities you require and sites that may be in your particular area etc pretty much same as The Caravan Club offering.

OK you Archies supporters:  I have just checked out my first o/n stop for my next trip over the water.   I want to stop at Nantes Camping on 20 Feb 18.      The web site via Google map states thats ok, but Archies say it doesnt open until 23 Feb, it uses a different name for the site and is not quite in the same place on the map.    A few ??? On one site?  Have I got it wrong?

I am sure Archie would appreciate a quick e-mail to update information. It has to be appreciated that Archie is not a commercial organisation and makes no money from his site so he does rely on fellow campers giving him feedback.

Well, they say we all learn something every day. I had no idea until now that this Archie was a person - but then despite touring Europe for 40+ years I have never looked at his enormous piece of work, or felt the slightest need to do so.

Now I am all ears and ready to learn some more.....please tell me why on earth does the guy do it?

I've just checked this out on the Acsi website the site is called Nantes Camping and its open all year, its near the University and close to the trams that will take you into town should you so wish. We have stayed on this site about 3 years ago.

    Hi Rufs

We live in Benijofar about 30 minutes from Villamartin and have stopped at all the sites mentioned above and the quality of all is very good but stand out one for me is Playa Mazarron in Bulnuevo purely on location.

April/June is the best time to visit this part of Spain when all the Brits have all gone home because at the moment most site are very full so we don't often venture out till April.

We like Playa Mazarron because of its location right in the centre of Bolnuevo and on the beach, the village of Bolnuevo has plenty of bars and restaurant's with a good mix of Spanish/British and if you tire of that Puerto Mazarron is nice town about 20 minutes away. Like Peedee says the Marjal sites are well worth a visit with excellent facilities but I would also add Camping La Marina but you will need transport for all these sites.

New campsites in the area include two  in Calpe and two in Vilajoisa.

    Phil

I would agree that on location the Playa Mazarron site is well placed, just at the time of year Oct. we visited it the site was full and felt cramped.

The rocks at Bolnuevo were interesting and the town pleasant

If staying at Mazarron, you aren't far from the Roman amphitheatre at Cartagena. That is if old rocks rock your boat. wink

Hi eurortraveller, I think it was CT that first made me aware and I know that ValDa posts regularly when there are updates to the database.

As we have sat nav built in it is not quite so useful for us now but I still use it occasionally with Google Earth if heading to somewhere new.

There was a connected site that had a massive range of site guide book links but that has not been updated since 2014 but is still very useful as was just a link that will point you in the right direction........no pun intended. I did post about this back in March and ValDa confirmed that it was closed but whilst the site address, below,  does not work on mp PC, just tried again, but it does work on my ipad??

    users.telenet.be/leo.huybrechts/camp1.htm

Sure that ValDa can answer the 'why' question.

CY-they say that when reading you see what you are expecting to see so, when I looked at you post, I was, up to the word Cartegena, seeing Marizion and thinking Minnack theatre!

    Allan

Re your link to Leo's site the clue is the note about ill heath. Val may wish to provide more information. Despite living in different countries I think that Leo and Archie used to work closely together on the provision of good quality free information.

Thanks TG, I can sleep easy now.  I note that there are a couple of Italian restaurants close by, have you tried either of them?

Hi the 'TwoDavids', I was aware of the circumstances but it was the ability to access the site via the iPad but not the computer that puzzled me.

As the site provided links then so long as that guide was still being produced then you would still end up at a 'current'' guide.

I did open a new tab on the iPad and pasted the address to check that way and it went straight to the page but maybe that's a technical thing which may not work on someone else's device.

We have our MH buddies down this week so will get them to try it.

As you can see lots of links but some don’t work, maybe site no longer use. Looking at the page for France you can see links to guides for sites, regions and departments.
