I do feel sorry for the OP having damage done to his property due to somebody who has never learned how to reverse his outfit.
IMO if a driver cannot reverse he should not take a caravan outfit on to a public highway or any public road.
If an outfit can enter a dead end, anybody with a modicum of driving skill can easily reverse the outfit back out again.
Can't blame the layout of any site ----- the driver is entirely to blame if he is incompetent.

Somewhere like Rooksbury Park would take at least 15 + minutes to route march around, imagine the potential chaos back at reception if all new arrivals left their outfits in the checking in bays.
Me thinks that is a non starter. On the basis that I can reverse my outfit and read a site plan AD method is redundant.If you cannot reverse your outfit you shouldn't be on the road.

Sorry forgot you do not understand the UK leisure industry, trying to cater for the large amount of people wishing to use their sites in such a tiny area ,compared to the Vast spaces that other countries enjoy with the same or smaller markets

The population density of the "vast spaces" of the Netherlands is greater than it is in England. They seem to organise their leisure industry very well, catering for their own people as well as those pouring in from Germany

An interesting thread Smartelex and Cheshire Cat. Sorry to hear about your recent woes on site caused by a fellow caravanner.
I like the concept of having an interactive map to select available pitches (much like selecting seats on a plane) however in practise with the nature of our great hobby people change their plans and by allocating pitches at the booking stage the wardens would have little or no ability to juggle pitch availability when folks stay on or (dare I say it) don't turn up/ leave early.
I'm afraid manoeuvring accidents will happen on sites no matter how we allocate pitches: again, its the nature of the industry. I sympathise greatly with your experience and thank you for sparking an interesting discussion.

Helen, I wonder if, some how, a reminder could go out to all members on the rules about driving round sites, that short cuts across grass are ill advised etc due to hidden dangers of driving over left behind awning pegs risking punctures; catching awning stays and of course, as in our case, actually hitting another member's caravan or car.
We we are still without our own car, over a week later and don't expect it back till early next week (last update).

I'd like to be able to book a specific pitch, many of the commercial sites do it but the CC chooses not to for all the reasons given in various posts plus the fact that they are dinosaurs!
I think it would stop the 12 o clock (or well before) stampede as well which could only be beneficial.
It wouldnt stop eejits like the one in the OP though, they would just cause mayhem elsewhere.

May be that many members prefer to coose on arrival at new sites? I do. I would like to be able to choose to have a hard standing however but can see problems with that and particularly when I wish to extend a stay either by staing on for extra nights or deciding to arrive a couple of days earlier. All in all I will stick with status quo

specific answer....it varies....but we dont stroll around 'aires', why would we, no-one checks you in.......
...but aren't we are talking about sites?....
and it was exactly the same on this one....leave the van at the entrance, and recce the pitch.....come back when youve chosen one.....
no queues anywhere, despite 60 owners club vans booked to arrive today.....just one (or at most, two) vans on site driving around at any one time....
as they all arrived at pretty much different times (no artificial 12 o clock bow wave) they all got on without congestion....or driving over each others pitches

as always extremely interesting to hear what happens over there, where I assume the site are emptier and you can do this? Not much help over here though?
Also you miss out one important point, what was the leaving time?
If there was one then it must have been early enough so that someone arriving at 10 am could find a pitch, or there was enough vacant pitches to accommodate those who arrive and those still not left?
Or there is no set leaving time then logically there must be 60 vacant pitches otherwise all those 60 arriving might find every pitch taken by those still not left. So again a far emptier site than happen over here.
or of course those campers over there all nicely spread their arrivals and leaving to allow the situation you describe? Even so there has to be a lot of slack in pitches to ensure no one is kept waiting? But didn't you say that once the pitch wasn't ready and the owner plied you with food and drink?
So either way while the system works over there it would not work over here where sites are much fuller. So while it doesn't really help thinsg here an interesting view on sites over there
