Italy with motor home and car trailer

Could anyone offer us advice on travelling from Zeebrugge to Italy for one month. We are travelling with a 7.2 meter motor home with car trailer. Have noticed that lots of sites are quite small. If anyone has done this before we would appreciate any information.

Whilst being caravanners, with 7.2m van we did find some sites with very small or awkward pitches so for us, a mover was absolutely critical.

We met a couple in Spain with a trailer and car which they needed help with every time they changed site (even the trailer needed three peole to move) and we wondered how they could be sure of remaining independent?

If you can man (or woman) handle the trailer then it may be fine, otherwise I think you will need to be very careful that the sites you choose have plenty of space or room to reverse trailer in first then set M/H next to it.

Asking for the size of pitches (often 80 sq m so tight for us) would be a good start.

Hopefully, other suggestions will be more positive.

You will need to check in advance with the each site you intend to go to as many sites have small pitches and small access roads. The rule of thumb is the more popular the place or area e.g the Lakes/Cinque Terre the more likely you could have find it difficult. Italy in terms of road type and size is not so unlike this country with a similar population density hence traffic density.

At some sites you will manage, but you will find some sites where there is no room for Motorhome plus car and trailer when they are separated,  plus wind out awning with room to sit outside. The best bet may well be sites with a separate car park where either the car or the trailer can be parked away from the pitch, but  you are limiting the options of where you can go.

Did a month tour of  the entire coast of Italy last year with a 7.3 van and Touareg - overall length around 40ft.    Did all the research beforehand, used the CC for most of the site bookings to ensure the pitches were large or larger than usual, but still had trouble in the majority of them getting on the pitch.

Had to uncouple almost every time and use the motor-mover to pitch, but  left no room for the car to be parked alongside at times.   In essence no real issue, but I really found it impossible to complete the usual reverse-in coupled together as the people opposite or next door filled their pitches and there was just no room to manoeuvre.   As previous poster said, we found the roads between the pitches much narrower than the UK or other parts of Europe.

In addition some pitches were in wooded areas and this just added to the issue of positioning.  Trying to miss the trees.

Of course sites varied, and some were like fields without any demarcations,  but these were in the minority.    It did put us off, as we felt the outfit length was not suited to touring Italy.    And, could understand why most people had those small Eribas or smaller motorhomes..

Hope this gives you some idea of what to expect, as it was a bit of a surprise for us, despite European caravanning for a number of years.

Maybe if you give an indication of where you would like to stay some of us could make recommendations for sites that might provide more room. Whilst it is true that pitches in Italy tend to be smaller than, say, in France there are sites with more room.

Pitches can be smaller than we are used to here.  We have been 3 times to Italy, twice with our 7.95m twin axle and chose sites that claimed to have larger pitches, which worked quite well, though even a large pitch can have hedges and trees that make access tricky.  The mover was essential.

If going low season, sites will not be so busy, so probably a better choice of pitches.

Can you move your trailer by hand, with the car on it?  If not you could have a problem. I presume you would be able to unload the car and then manhandle the trailer if necessary, so that might be a solution.

Most sites will have a car park and some might insist you leave a "second car" in the car park.
