Route advice

Hi. I'm going to be leaving from les peneyrals in dordogne and travelling to camping sainte Claire neufchatel north east of rouen.

Route suggests Paris outer ringroad. Won't be doing that after driving down through there last year.

Alternative route says via le man's.

Or should I try to navigate via Orleans. Chartres. Evreux. Rouen way.

Suggestions please.

Definitely the Evreux route it's very straightforward, no issues.

If you are going to Neufchatel en Bray  A20 from Dordogne to Vierzon and then A71 to Orleans then A10 to junction 12 and exit onto N154 via Chartres/Dreux/Evreux/Rouen. The join A28/A29 to the campsite. Save all the hassle of getting caught up in traffic around Paris.

We never book and this is the only site where we nearly came unstuck. Turned up at 3.15 in mid June and got the very last pitch. There was a queue at reception because the husband had to keep riding round the site on his bike checking pitch availibility. All the people behind me got turned away.

Either the Evreux or Le Mans routes are fine, I tend to go Le Mans but that's personal taste. I normally email St Claire a day or so before arriving and so far have not had a problem. I'm pretty sure there is a link on their web site.

For the last two years coming back from southern France (Millau) we have used the often recommended Chartres, Evreux, Rouen route and we loathe it. It has to be our least favourite route in the whole of France.

There are some motorway standard sections but the rest has endless roundabouts, few stopping places (pull-ins only), many lorries travelling at their maximum permitted speed. The road surface is good though. It is overdue for an Autoroute which I believe has been proposed.

Although Rouen transition is OK it is not perfect with heavy traffic and unattractive scenery. Going North, make sure you stay on the Auturoute section until you see the Calais sign. Don't turn off early. I believe the last section may be a toll road.

Next time its Tours for us, no question.

    Good luck.

St Claire also has a very good motorhome Aire with full facilities for 12 Euros a night.

The only thing I would point out about coming via Evreux and Rouen is the D18E through Rouen along the south bank of the Seine can get very congested and I would avoid this. I prefer to traverse Rouen via Pont de L'Arche and the N15 north bank route to the A28.

That's the route we take too.  Have also done the D18E, but much prefer the N15.

Let me whisper it quietly.  Coming north to Rouen from Evreux you need neither of those alternatives - no south  bank or north bank

Just stay on the autoroute, pay a 3 euro toll, and leave at the sign saying Calais. You will sweep through Rouen on the urban expressway, straight to the bridge and the tunnel.

Hitchglitch gave this route the other day but most people seem reluctant to pay a 3 euro toll even though it takes you straight to the urban expressway.

We don't all get charged Class 2 rates ET otherwise I would agree. One advantage of taking the N15 route is the availability of cheaper fuel prices at the garages on this route.

Camping St Claire can fill up really early. We have used Camping aux Cygnes d'Opale at Blangy sur Bresle which we have found to be perfectly acceptable for an overnight stay. The access from the motorway is really easy and there is a supermarket two minutes away.

Once you leave the Autoroute after paying the small toll you are North of the river and driving through an industrial area with very cheap fuel.

We stayed twice in the last month at Camping St Clare, was full on way back so essential to book. If you use the Leclerc for fuel use the pay at pump and you don't then have to go through the narrow exit by the pay booth.

Recently returned from France and our MH friends checked the price of the route mentioned, after getting a shock €27 price at Millau on the way out, and it was €5.60 as a Class 3.

    They have an Autotrail Scout.

we came through Rouen on a sunday about 11am and it was very quite on the D18e. I guess if you do it mid week there would be a lot of hgv traffic.

We came up the 154 last Friday and it was OK, followed Valda's route on the D6015 thru Rouen and it was pretty clear so would recommend.
