New to the world of touring but travelling down to Bordeaux next week. Need to find a site for an overnight stop with hook up, ideally about an hour from Calais. Family of 4 with young children and been told scary stories about being too close to Calais. Anyone have a recommendation. Thank you

If you are going via Rouen, Camping St Claire at Neufchatel en Bray. It is very popular so it might be adviseable to book. The site does have an adjacent excellent Aire with EHU (14 pitches) but you cannot book a pitch on it and if you don't get there early my betting is it will be full.

It is just over 100 miles from Calais but all but the las couple of miles are on the autoroute. It usually takes about 1-1/2 hours.

There are so many options and nearer to Calais isn't really a problem.

A couple of weeks ago we saw a few individuals trying the fastenings on the back of an HGV trailer.

This was well over two hours from Calais...when approached by the driver they had a few pleasant words (Yes really, honest!) and then disappeared back into the woods.

We never stop in Calais but very many do without problemwink

Overnight at a campsite in that area is safe enough. Use the campsite search facility on UKCampsite .co .uk and choose from there if you haven't bought a printed site guide. Maybe Camping Fontaine des Clercs is about the right distance if you want to be an hour from Calais, but as EJB says there are lots of other options. But don't arrive at midnight and expect campsites to be open. Good luck.

We have used a campsite at Rue a couple of times, fine for an overnight stop and Carrefour Market opposite which also has fuel. Its about 60 miles from Calais. See my report here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_de_la_maye.html

You don't say what time you are arriving and what route you are taking. Late arrival reduces the options considerably.

Presume there is some important reason for wanting EHU, otherwise an Autoroute Aire is fine for many people. We did it with a caravan and two children for many years.
