3 Mifi in France

I purchased a reasonable number of gig for my 3 Mifi, as you are able to use as if in the UK. I am getting very reasonable speeds, certainly enough for video streaming. However, although everything else including downloading my newspaper works fine, I have had no success with video. I know there are issues with trying to stream things like BBC iplayer, however, I did not expect problems with Sky Go for which we pay. Also no success with things like You Tube. My question is do 3 block streaming or have others had any success?

I can't answer your question but there seems to be a question mark over whether UK networks allow the full speed on data roaming after a certain amount of your monthly allowance has been used. Some of them throttle back to 2G speeds. I always thought 3 were one of the good guys. Have you checked the T&C's on their fair use policy for data roaming?

Sky Go et al will probably be blocked by the broadcaster (Sky, BT) as the content is licenced for UK only and not abroad, the same happens when trying to listen to a football/sports match on internet radio they are not allowed to stream abroad only the UK so they block it if your connection is not in the UK or they cannot determine where the connection comes from.

Not sure about You Tube but again some content maybe for UK only but most would be available all over I would have thought.

When we were in France we were able to watch tv via Sky Go and BBC I player.   We didn't have a mifi but some of the sites we stayed on had excellent wifi.

You need to set up a VPN, virtual private network, which makes it appear that you are still in the UK. Just google it....there is a small monthly charge for the service, I think it was about 10 dollars.

    Worked very well.

as mentioned in the other 'roaming' thread, from mid July? companies will allow all voice and data packages to be used all over Europe without roaming charges....(O2 and Vodafone have already notified customers)....which means (if you wish) you can dispense with mifi and extra sims and just negotiate a decent data allowance for the phone and use a single device for tethering.

ive been using my Euro 'allowance' for the past couple of trips, this is now increased to match my full uk allowance.

I have a 3MiFi, it works fine in the UK but I have not tried streaming video. I couldn't get it to work at all on my winter trip to France and Spain this year. Others have had similar problems and it has been discussed >here< but I have not had the oppportunity to try it further.

Thanks for the responses. I think MichaelT may well be right about it being blocked by Sky. When I had a look at the video link of Goldies cow at Adams farm, that played OK. So clearly 3 allow some video. Ah well, I was only going to use it to watch the Grand Prix, so not worth setting up a VPN.

It does however seem a bit extreme of Sky, you are limited to the number of devices you can use on it, so it is not as though you could sell off logins to half the French population. It's a wonder they haven't introduce a European option, at of course an extra charge.

I think it is more to do with the broadcasting rights.  Sky will only have rights to broadcast in the UK so to watch in say France you would have to use the French rights owner.

I did have a few problems. To start with it would only let me connect 1 device, as it said the account was already in use when we tried a second. Then magically we have been able to connect more. However, I still have to connect them with the My3 login each and every time. Where as in the UK they connect as soon as I turn the Mifi on, if there are no other viable sources.

I am sure your right. Something like the GP is OK in French but the French TV lets you watch right up to the race then scrambles it. Never mind, but I would not of bought as much 3 data if I had realised.☹️
