Hi,

Germany, Austria, France, obviously the cycleways are dedicated to cycles whether aided by battery or not. But does anyone know the ruling if any regarding other battery devices using these, such as stand up scooters.

Legally I  don't know what the ruling is, but yesterday wallking(!) the cycle route near our campsite in the Ardeche we saw two boys on hoverboards, and another on a little electric scooter using the same cycle route.  On another route near St Pons de Thomieres we saw a lot of skateboarders!   I suppose it depends on the surface - not all cycle routes are entirely tarmac surfaced.

A Footway means a way comprised in a highway, which also comprises a carriageway, being a way over which the public has a right of way on foot only [Section 329(1) Highways Act 1980]. So, in towns and cities, technically, we have footways, not footpaths or pavements.

Good luck with your question Dave!

We use, in order of preference, off road cycle paths, national cycle routes and foot ways BUT only when there are no pedestrians. Where we live many would consider quiet, traffic wise, but for cyclists the roads are dangerous as they are narrow and have so many bends and shaded areas so we tend to go to areas that have cycle paths but sometimes, as now on a rally, we have no option but to use the road so, if there is a footway beside it, we will use that.

The crucial thing is consideration for others which, if exercised by all, should not lead to any problems.

I don't know what any ruling is either but I've used various cycle routes, pathways, pavements and occasionally roads in France whilst riding a mobility scooter.  Consider others and watch out for very speedy cyclists!

Cheers for the reply's, I know when in Annecy last year the cycle route is shared with pedestrians but marked and I saw all sorts of leisure vehicles using it. Just wondered if it was the accepted norm as its quite a bit stricter in this country if applied.
