Hi could I get some advise please?

we have left our caravan in storage at St Remy de Provence, this is a place we love, this is the first year and although we will be taking our main 4 weeks there in the summer we are hoping to pick it up late May early June to visit other areas, we thought Carcassone as its many years since we drove that way and never stopped off.

Advise please on campsites in the area and any other tips would be appreciated, also do you think we need to book at that time of year.

Thanks Madeleine

    Hi Madeleine

A couple of years we used Camping de la Cite on the edge of Carcassonne. It's a relatively easy walk to the Medieval City along the riverside path, although a bit of a climb on the final approach depending which entrance you use . I would also suggest looking at the town itself just over the river. Some years ago we also stayed at a site in Trebes which is almost on the Canal du Midi and has easy access to Carcassonne. You can cycle along the canal or go by car.

We stayed at La Commanderie at Rustique, a little village seven miles from Carcassonne and loved the laid back attitude there. You certainly wouldn't need to book.

There is more information about it with pictures and information about places to visit in the area in my blog.

Carcassonne is certainly worth a day if you haven't been before, although we are happier sitting under the arcades on market day in Mirepoix about 30 miles away, with a cold beer and a light lunch at the Maison des Consuls.

Campsites everywhere in the area, all shapes, styles, sizes and prices. And away from Carcassonne all will be pretty empty in June. You can wander at will.
