South of France

Hi Everybody, hope you are all well, If anybody can help I will be truly grateful. We have changed our plans from going to Italy now want to go south of France in June around the 19th June to 2nd July.

I'm trying to find a site that is near to the beach and places to explore, not worried about a pool and somewhere with a bit of piece and quiet. Yes I know I'm looking for heaven lol. Also need to know of any good sites to stop at along the route for a break.

Hi Jed, there are a lot of questions that come to mind but, with just two weeks, maybe it's a bit far?

Also as you want peace and quiet that may be to find elsewhere. We are going to the Beziers area to a site with direct beach access in May but whilst a big site most sites are still quietish in May/June except for the very very busy areas like lake Garda etc.

They also list sites near major routes and also look at the ACSI and Camping Cheques website for ideas.

Don't know what route you are planning on but that time of year you can get really good discount on the longer crossings when you get an ITX, ferry and sites or cheques, package.

Hi Jed - I don't honestly think that 'the South of France', 'near a beach', and 'a little piece of quiet' go together.  

Which part of the coast are you planning to visit - the area east of Marseilles, or west of Marseilles and down to the Spanish border,  I would normally use a different route when going west to that I'd choose for going east - and therefore overnight stop suggestions would be different.

Sorry to ask extra questions but it will help give better answers.

And AllanandJean - the information on sites near the main routes through Europe (which you link to as http://users.telenet.be/leo.huybrechts/camp1.htm)  is no longer up to date.  It was last updated in 2014.  Sadly Leo died and his work has been taken over, updated, and incorporated into Archie's Camping website.  They were good friends and worked together on these sites.  There are links to Leo's information about sites near the main routes, at the bottom of Archie's home page.

Hi again Jed - having visited Provence for years and years when our children were small, and still having friends there, we intend to go back again this year.  Your post prompted me to look again at campsites, and as usual I start with looking at the ACSI Card website (www.campingcard.co.uk) for the sort of site we like.

There are two sites at just 13 euros each which we would certainly consider - both in the area we want to be in (between Frejus and St Tropez as our friends live nearby.  One is Camping L'Argentiere at Cogolin (just inland from St Tropez/Port Grimaud) so not exactly beachside, but it looks just our sort of site in a very natural setting, the other is Le Vaudois at Roquebrune, just inland from St Raphael which has been recommended to us by two different friends who go there.  The 13 euros covers pitch, two adults, car and caravan, awning, electricity (and a dog if you have one).  There are other sites at 15, 17 and 19 euros - but we prefer not to spend any more than we have to!

There is absolutely loads to do in the area - some wonderful places to visit and walk nearby, fantastic markets, and how can you avoid at least one trip to St Tropez! 

Have a look at the results of my search - and if you do choose one or other of the sites, we may be there as well!

Edited, just to say, though, that in late June/early July you may  need to set off early to avoid the traffic in the area, which can be a real problem in some places you might want to go sight-seeing.

Hi Valda, many thanks for your reply and your help as this is our first trip abroad, we was going to try Italy but because of the earthquakes we decided to try the South of France. We have been going to Turkey and love exploring but love a nice beach sometimes so we have been spoilt. I will look at your recommendations and again thank you.

JedTracy, If I was going to the Med for the dates you mention - before French schools break up for their summer holiday - I would be looking at Camping Marius on the coast near Martigues - the one bit of the French Mediterranean coast which is little known to British visitors. And my fall back alternative would be Camping Felix de la Bastide, a few miles inland on the lagoon. Both have good websites.

Hi Val, I was trying to point the OP to campsite guides, which are just links,not the en route info which as you say may be out of date.

Thanks for the reminder of Le Vaudois, Val.  We're still looking for a campsite in the area that suits us, since our 'longstanding site' in Puget changed hands and is now static only.  We have a couple of others on our list, including Le Vaudois, but you mentioning it on here might help me put it to the top of our list next time we go in the direction of Frejus.

We've tried L'Etoile D'Argens a few times.  It's an expensive site but I don't really felt at home there at all.

Hey Jed if you listen to some you would never go anywhere, so get ACSI research some sites and enjoy the heck out of it.

PS I went to Italy for 2 weeks last year by myself and had a great time.
