First visit to La Rochelle
Can anyone recommend a site near La Rochelle or surrounding area. It's our first visit to the area so we would appreciate any help on places of interest, eating out etc. A decent route from Caen ferry with a caravan. We have a small dog to consider and love walking.

It's hard to find a good campsite at La Rochelle itself. I think most people would either go over the toll bridge to the island of Re or look at mainland sites half an hour or so to the south - at Chatellaillon Plage , Fouras or Rochefort. There are choices in your site guides for all those places depending on the style of site you want and the time of year you are going.
As for a route I would go via Rennes and Nantes. It's almost all dual carriageway but the tolls with a caravan are only about 12 euros. That's much cheaper than paying 55 euros on the autoroute via Le Mans and about as quick.

Some years ago we went to a small campsite near La Rochelle. It is also near enough to the Ile de Re bridge to cycle over to the Island. Details on www.aupetitport.com. To see the info in English look for the union flag in the top rh corner. Quiet village with reasonable dog walks.

conversely, its just as possible to stay on the island and cycle over the bridge (or take a bus) into La Rochelle....
for us, we prefer it that way round as we like more of our time on the island, with just a couple of visits to the city....
however, its about choice and flexibility, both options are available...

Avoid the Camping Municipal at Port de Plaisance des Minimes near the town. I stayed there one June a couple of years ago as it was convenient when I was competing in an international dinghy racing event. It was packed, beside a busy road, too many pitches, far too few loos or showers, noisy, grubby, devoid of any grass or trees and more or less in an industrial estate location.

I would endorse what Eurotraveller says (above).
We have been to La Rochelle many times and find it to be very pleasant but we have yet to find a campsite we like. The Ile de Re or Chatellaillon are mush more attractive alternatives for staying. You can easily reach LR from either
