    A third alternative!

Have a look at the website for Camping Mals. It's neither in Austria nor Switzerland, but just a few miles over the border from both of them -  and actually in the German speaking part of the Italian Alps - the Sud Tirol.

Would recommend Grubhof. Visited last year as part of a CC tour. For facilities the best site we have every visited. No pool but easy walking or cycling into Lofer and surrounding villages, handy for Saltsburg, Innsbruck, etc

Difficult choice re the countries , for me Austria just edges it. For a site in Austria have a look at the sites near Mondsee , I will look out for the name shortly, not too far from St Wolfgang for a trip , of course in these areas with mountains you do get hills LOL, bet you knew that. There is also camping Natterersee not far from Innsbruck.

Austria to me is a wonderful country to visit and my favourite having visited 14 in Europe with the caravan.  It is very beautiful, the inhabitants are the friendliest I have met and love the Brits and love to speak English.  The Campsites we have used are 2nd to none.  It is a spotlessly clean and organised country and yes one of the Cheapest in Western Europe for Fuel, Food, Eating Out and Clothing.

There are several different areas to visit.  If you need any more info just ask be pleased to help.

For info and lots of photo's go to joysofeuropeancaravanning.co.uk

We have stayed in Switzerland for one holiday and driven through a couple of times by other means. We have visited Austria much more frequently and our preference is Austria. We were there last year and went as far as Vienna, in fact we did a complete circuit of Austria.

Here are 3 but not really on your way home.

    http://www.campingcard.co.uk/austria/tyrol/natters/campsite-ferienparadies-natterer-see-100873/

This might be nearer to your route home never been there but know folks who have and say it is excellent.  Not sure if it is ACSI as others are.

If you were coming home via Constance and Black Forest I could give you another one in Austria.

St Wolfgang in Austria - there is a lovely site at the west end of the town - and Sieser Alm in Sud Tyrol, plenty of fully serviced pitches, fabulous facilities and restaurant and great views too! Natterersee is good or try Klienwalsertal in the north west of Austria, close to German border.

It is a difficult one David as Vierthaler is the one I recommended to you but they close end of September.  I do not think that Grubhoff is that far from Salzburg

What about Winkl-Landthal at Bishofsweiesen they are open til 13th October 2017  What date in October do you need.?  Not too far off the A8  .www.camping-winkl.de  We have been there 4/5 times  ACSI Camping Card taken.

    Hi

We will be travelling from Bamberg to Bertchesgarden in May and looking for somewhere to stop in between. Don't particularly want to go to Munich. Any recommendations?

Hi Martatin,  Where are you staying at Bamberg we stopped there years back lovely area and we stopped at a lovely campsite.

It is just 241 miles to Berchtesgaden from Bamburg but if you want to stay other places en route I can recommend a Campsite near to Regensburg and another on Chiemsee  both lovely places to explore.

It certain is a do able journey in a day especially with a MH.  Let me know if you are interested in either of these places.

    Hi David

Not done Germany before but holidaying in France over last 2 years reckon it will take us about 5 hours to do the 240 miles. I tend to get tired at 200 miles so didn't want to push it. Other thought was arriving at site whether we would get on late afternoon (Mr cautious!). How do German roads compare to France?

Dianne just spotted your reply, yes would be interested to know your sites. Plan is to stay at Familiencamping Allweglehen near Bertchesgarden and Campingplatz Insel Bamberg
which have been recommended to us.

I am going to Seefeld in Tirol from Lake Constance however there is a steep hill up from Innsbruck which isn't recommended for  towing a caravan. There is another route up from Telfs but I don't know if the route is suitable for caravans. I do not want to travel down from Garmish as the detour is too long.

Has anyone suggestions for a route please.

(N.B. I am towing a twin axle with a Toyota Landcruiser)

I have driven up to Seefeld from Innsbruck solo and as you say I am pretty sure they don't recommend it for caravans. Looking at my fairly large scale map the road from Telfs looks to be only a minor road. I wonder if it would be better to approach from Garmisch albeit it a longer way round?

Thanks for that, I know the road up from Innsbruck very well as I use it every year for our skiing trip and it is steep. The road in from Telfs isn't all that bad, it's just that on the map there are a couple of hairpin bends which indicate to me it may be steep! However the distance from Telfs is longer and the climb may be less steep. As previously mentioned I do not wish to approach from Garmisch as it would be too much of a detour

Hi Sorry not got back to you before Martatin.  I have visited Allweglehen Site to look and wasn't impressed we have always well 4/5 times stopped at Winkl-Landthal and it takes ACSI Card other site doesn't. Winkl gives you discount/free card for transport and attractions and bus stop right outside the campsite train station nearby too.

When we went to Bamburg a few years ago though, we stopped here and it was lovely situated just outside the smallest walled city of Germany of Sesslach.  Not far from Bamburg or Coburg both must see towns.

Had a boat trip on the Danube from Bamburg see here Trip 2005.

Hope this helps.  If you would like to email me dvt1402@hotmail.co.uk  with your email address I can send you more details and route.

Thanks David I thought you meant sites that I had mentioned.  the only one I can recall where they close till 3pm is the one we stayed at on Bodensee last June.  Prumtal never closes really as if office is closed you just go to the Restaurant.

    Cheers Dianne

Thanks David but the one time when this happened to us was in France at a Municipal site. When it got to opening time after lunch the man in the office saw us sitting there seeing it was a Brit too. Even though we went to the Office he did not unlock the door till 15 minute after scheduled opening time  when we were admitted he only gave us 5 amp Electricity when we paid extra for 10 amp.  We were not impressed..

But getting back to the topic I do hope that Davthevanman has got some help but looking back he has not posted since the 17th January and his original post when a lot of Members offered good advice.
