Dog + 1
Hi,we are planning our summer holiday and taking a caravan full of children and 2 dogs to France and Switzerland. All the sites we have looked at have maximum number of people at 6 and only 1 dog. I would presume as during daylight hours children and selves will be out and about so it would be hard to pin down who belongs to which site. The dogs however are more noticeable as they are different breeds. Do you book and hope for the best?

I can't speak for what happens abroad but why deceive site operators and chance ruining your holiday?
I'm sure you wouldn't want to get UK caravanners a bad name so why not be honest and book sites appropriate to your needs?

Good point Tinwheeler. I have mailed some sites but as yet they haven't got back. The sites in question have been chosen as they offer excellent facilities for the children, which having spent some time looking in areas we hope to travel and chosen family and dog friendly sites it is annoying when they then stipulate 1 dog.

I'm afraid it's a fact of life that some campsites stipulate that they will not accept any dogs at all, especially in peak season. And you have obviously found other sites with a limit of one dog, and a limit of the number people on a pitch - but the good news is that there are many other sites without those sort of limits. They are not all as strict, though they will charge you for them all.
If you would like to say how many there will be in your party, what style of sites you prefer, and which area you would like to visit, then you may get suggestions of suitable sites where you will be welcome. I hope so.

You can use the Eurocampings website (Click for link but it's NOT Eurocamp the tent/mobile home operator) to find sites which take dogs in high season, and then display how many dogs they will accept. If you use the Advanced Search, and under 'There are 2717 sites which say they accept dog(s) - some possibly one, others more.
The first site I looked at in France was Val de Landrouet (in Brittany) just because it was at the top of the list. They accept two dogs. When you've got the list of sites, click any site you like the look of and then the 'Facilities' tab, scroll down and you will see a button which says dogs - click on that and it will tell you how many dogs are accepted at any one time.
Sadly, using the same search in Switzerland I can't find any sites which actually state that they accept dogs in high season though I think there must be some.

We've used Lazy Rancho at Interlaken a number of times and I'm sure I remember people with more than 1 dog, there's no note of a limit on their website but they charge CHF 3 in high season.
It's a great area with children as they'll enjoy the days out on mountain transport. Just remember to research the various travel passes available there as individually booked tickets can be eye wateringly expensive. Travelling with children on the trains is good value as you can buy a "Junior Card" for CHF20, this covers all your own children under 16 for the whole of your stay and there is a similar "Grandparents' Card" which costs CHF 30. Last time we were there, other campers told us dogs have to be paid for on the trains unless they can be carried in a bag!

We have two dogs and yes some sites stipulate one , but i do think if you go in low season they allow the extra one as we found that to be correct at the sites we visited last year. In high season where the sites are busy you might struggle . Good luck though .

I think the maximum of six people per pitch seems to be pretty standard as far as I can tell. Also sensible as well as any more than that you start to impact on your neighbours although I wonder if sites might turn a blind eye if a very young baby happened to take you over that number. As far as dogs is concerned most sites seem to allow two, at least in the low season and some won't allow any in the high season. Two sites we stayed at, one in Germany and another in Austria did not allow dogs at all because they fronted onto freshwater lakes. It is very difficult to answer such a generalised question with any certainty. Better perhaps to give us a list of favoured sites which might allow people who have been to advise. If any of the sites are in the Caravan Club's ABS service then of course the Club will be able to find the answer for you. Beyond that it is down to contacting individual sites to get the definitive answer. However be aware some of those sites might not have admin staff on duty at this time of year.
