Thanks for letting me know what my ‘caterpillar’ photo was. It wasn’t as colourful as one I saw at the end of last year

That was what I remember it as now, "Vapourer Moth"

This morning on my walk along the Leeds Liverpool canal I could see shoals of bream and roach also as I crossed over a footbridge I could clearly see a large Pike keeping quite still, no doubt waiting for its breakfast to swim past.
Unfortunately the reason I could do this is because the canal water level is very low and there is no boat movement to stir up the silt. Very low levels of the top up reservoirs in Yorkshire and Lancashire have meant that locks have had to be chained up in an effort to retain the water.
The last time water levels were this low was in 1995 when water tankers had to be used to top up the reservoirs. I fear a hosepipe ban is imminent unless we get some heavy rain soon.

Pleased to see a Jersey Tiger moth in our garden once more, on a door this time, they seem to spend a lot of time soaking up the sun on hard surfaces. Have never seen one on a plant or tree.

That is good news Oneputt, the last time I saw them was many years ago not far from Salisbury Plain.
We seemed to have had a good summer for Hummingbird Hawk Moths had 8 flying around the flowers left on the Salvias as not much out now with this heat and lovely to watch.

After a slightly disappointing visit to Wicken Fen on the way to our CL tonight, I spotted a partridge about fifteen metres away from the motorhome plus a half dozen red deer grazing a few hundred metres away. Five adults and a fawn charging around and annoying the grown-ups.

Doing a bit of watering and went to fill the watering can from the water butt only to have a young tree frog jump out of the can do not know who was more surprised any way in a different place in the shade. Have noticed that the last couple of days that a lot of Swallows and House martins are gathering ready to go south very early indeed and the nightingales and Golden Orioles have gone already and thunk this weather will have a dramatic change to our wildlife here although so far even with hot weather it has been a good year for butterflies which I enjoy but quieting down now.
Saw a dead Roe deer on side of road the other day when we went shopping afraid it is a hazard around here.

While sat having our lunch around noon by The Grove car park in Hamsterley Forest there were a couple of bats flying around the glade. I can't ever remember seeing bats flying and hunting in the middle of the day before. Also heard a Goshawk calling as we walked back along by the river.

Cheers, WN.

Did spot a partridge in the adjacent field a day or two ago, notwithstanding the absence of pear trees.

When out waking two days ago I spotted 5 Grey Herons in a field close to a small stream, so wondered if it was a family, adults and 3 fully grown fledglings.
There are a family of foxes living close to the CL we are on, and use it as their toilet, and I spotted one the other night when coming back from our last night, and then last night saw a Tawney Owl which sat in an oak watching us pass below.

Had a call this morning from a birding pal, to say that 2 avocets had been seen on Foulridge resser. We never get avocets in East Lancashire, so had a stroll over there. And there they were, showing very nicely.
A good one for the local list. 🙂
Also heard quite a few willow warblers singing, seems unusual for August. 🤔

We're saying farewell to the Swallows, they're gathering on the wires over our garden, chattering away, the odd Swift joining in. They're having a big feed up over the local fields One or two late nesters are remaining but the majority are off on their long journey. A bit like everyone leaving a camp site!

The wife and I stood looking out the kitchen window the other day watching a buzzard devouring a woodpigeon on our lawn he was there for sometime before flying off with the remains of the pigeon, it has now cleared up why we have in the past found pigeon feathers in our garden

All we've seen recently around the lanes and local area are lots of Buzzard Youngsters, usually sitting on a post somewhere near where the parents are circling for food and they are continually crying for attention. It happens at this time of year when they are left to start fending for themselves. Some can, some don't want to.
Let's face it how many people still have 40 y.o. children at home?🤣
Oh, and it's that time of the year again for the dreaded Beech Mast which has started to fall in ever larger quantities. Takes us until about May to stop dragging the stuff into the house.

Spotted this little beauty on our walk at Sizergh the other day. I think it is a Common Darter, perhaps WN or another expert can confirm or otherwise.
Each morning on our first morning walk from the Newby Bridge CL we could hear the plaintive cries of young Buzzards, and the adults could be seen flying around.
Today walking along by the coast we saw at least 10 Little Egrets on the shore, as well as hundreds of Oystercatchers by the tide line, and a few Curlew too.

We too have seen lots about, Damselflies too. It's hard getting a photo of one with a phone, they are so quick and "flighty" generally, but this little lady posed nicely on a gate for us.😊
