Sat Navs and Saumur - a bad mixture
Saumur, August 2010 and a scorching hot day when the air con earned its keep.
We had driven down to the Loire and the campsite was to the east of the town, somewhere. We had driven down from the north with no problems, crossed the river and followed the Sat Nav - big mistake - rather than following the co-pilot who always sits with the road atlas open on her knees checking where we are.
Sat Nav took us into Saumur and I wasn't worried about the driving as we have travelled extensively abroad. "She (the Nag Nav) will bring us out in the right place." She eventually did but not before taking us through a very busy and very hot town centre. Even though the air con was set to 'frost bite' level, sweat began to pour as the streets seemed to get narrower and narrower (with steel bollards by the side) and pedestrians more numerous.
Eventually we hit a road that I recognised that I knew led to towards the river and a right turn and away. Following it we soon 'escaped' from the town centre and on to our destination.
How many times do you hear 'don't trust the sat nav?. Another convert... Hmmm till next time.
The photo is one of the roads we took in Saumur.
