East to Dresden Part 2
Tuesday - moving on to Winsen Aller in Lower Saxony, Germany so we leave the Delft site just before 10am. The exit route out of the site has now changed and is via the Ikea car park and, if heading east, straight up the motorway ramp. Uneventful journey to Winsen Aller “Auf der Hude” campsite arriving at about 3.30pm. Winsen Aller is a village on the banks of the River Aller and is some 10 miles from the medieval city of Celle. Set up and then went shopping just outside Bergen. Diesel was priced at Euro 1.23 so filled up.
Storks have nested in and around Winsen for hundreds of years. I remember storks nesting on the chimney in the photo in the 1950’s/60’s.
On Wednesday had a drive around Hohne (my old stamping ground more than 40 years ago, then on to Weitzendorf where I used to play table tennis for the local pub team. Carried on to the old hanseatic town of Luneburg. Went to the top of the old water tower which has been saved and renovated in a campaign led by a local secondary school. Elevator up 11 floors and then out onto the top deck where the views of the old town and surrounding countryside were stunning. Walked back down stairs through the old water tank and various other bits of machinery. The water tower is also used for wedding ceremonies and also art exhibitions.
Auf Der Hude is located on the west side of Winsen Aller and fronts onto the river Aller. The campsite is family run and consist of the normal seasonal and touring pitches. Zabrina in reception speaks excellent English. If you pitch by the river the site will provide the 2 pin connector for you which they lock into the electric supply box after taking a meter reading. Supply is 16amp. The facilities are excellent consisting of both winter and summer toilet/shower blocks. Plenty of washing up and laundry facilities. Cleaning takes place from 9am. There is a pub on site which also serves as a restaurant, the menu is small but the food is quite good. Wi-Fi is available either hourly or weekly rates. The village centre is a 10 minute stroll away where you will find Rewe, Aldi and Lidl supermarkets. There is a post office a bank and a selection of small shops. There are a number of restaurants including a Thai which was very good.
