some members need more training
My wife and myself have just spent a wonderful week at Englethwaite Hall Caravan Club site. What a wonderful Site this is. During our stay, I have observed some pretty frightening things. I offered help to a fellow caravaner, who was having some difficulty, coupling his caravan to the car. My help was declined, but what I saw next was somewhat scary. As the jockey wheel of the caravan was lowered to meet the car towball, the red alko stabiliser handle and black coupling handle were both in the closed position, and only opened when the caravan was resting on the towball. Both these handles were then closed by hand, rather then allowing the black coupling handle to snap closed. No attempt was made to wind the jockey wheel down slightly, afterwards, to check that secure coupling had been made. This caravan could easily have parted company with the tow car.
The other very dangerous thing I saw, was on four different occasions, where the mais electric cable was coupled to the electric bollard first, and then to either the caravan or motor home. I know that on several occations, the Club magazine has carried articles on safe connecting of mains electric to caravan/matorhome.
