Where to stay in and around Caen, France

We will be going to France for our summer holiday this year, can anyone recommend safe place to stay overnight in and around Caen, the ferry does not arrive until 10pm i do not particulary want to drive overnigtht, if there is somewhere simple to just pull up that would be ideal.  someone had told me that there is such a place about 2min from the ferry port, does anyone know what it's called.
