New tax rates are to be introduced for vehicles first registered after 1st April 2017. The current number of vehicles qualifying for zero tax is being reduced. It appears that those free are largle hybrid models such as the Nissan Leaf. The highest emmisions vehicles such as the largest 4wd will have a one off £2000 charge when first purchased. Followed by a flat rate of £140 per year. That seems good news as the current annual rate is £505. However there is a sting in the tail if the vehicle costs more than £40,000 when new as there is an additional annual tax of £310 for a further 5 years taking the total annual tax to £450. Most large 4wd and even some high powered estates such as Mercs, BMWs etc will be caught by the higher charge. Still that is a little better than the current maxim and better still if you keep a car longer than 5 years.
