Ground sheets and pitches in Europe

Just back from a 3 week tour of Germany, Luxembourg and Holland and in all the sites we stayed we were dismayed at the state of the pitchs we were on. Every single one was devoid, in the main of grass and looked more like mud patch's. Kirchartzen in the
German Black Forest was the better of the ones, but even then the awning had to be out up on bare mud. As usual we put our mesh matting down, and by the end of our 10 days was pleased ot see the grass growing through but in Birklett in Luxembourg we had no
chance as the whole pitch was just mud. In Delft in Holland, the van was on hard standing but the awning was on bare earth which turned into a river when it rained. All of this was because the other campers, wether Dutch, German, Belgium, Italians or Swiss
and some British, used plastic tarpaulins instead of eco matting and so killed off the grass completley. When we put our eco matting down the mud just oozed through and was completly usless!. Only one site, Birkelt, attempted to do any thing for the users,
laying down wood chipping's on the worst affected sites. Next year we will be carrying a tarp or two just in case and copying our fellow Europeans.
